Who
Am I This Time? (1981)
Low-budget and choppily edited, Jonathan
Demme's film of Kurt Vonnegut's short story, "Who Am
I This Time," is none- the-less charming and fun. This
is mainly thanks to the bravura performance from Christopher
Walken. Playing a character who plays nothing but characters
from plays, Walken is on fire here, juggling duties
as a nerd, Cyrano, Stanley Kowalsi and Oscar Wilde's
"Earnest" with perfect ease.
The problem is: No one else is up to Walken's
ideal here. Demme cannot seem to create atmosphere or
subtlety, let alone the complexity Vonnegut's work.
Sarandon also is not up to par. Vonnegut's work makes
her hard and clinical in a way but she is also soft
and mysterious as well. Sarandon just seems wishy-washy.
Her own light truly shines only when she is reflecting
Walken's.
