Something
Wild (1986)
"My
nude scene in 'Something Wild' took three days to shoot.
Jeff and I had just met and it was on the second day
of shooting. It was good because it wouldn't have been
as akward if we had shot that scene later on." - Melanie
Griffith
Engaging
rollercoaster ride of a film from Jonathan Demme starring
Melanie Griffith and Jeff Daniels. This could almost
be described as a "buddy movie" even though the two
main characters do have a sexual relationship.
Griffith
plays Lulu, an impulsive, imaginative "wild" girl who
picks up the frumpy Charlie Driggs (Daniels) on a Friday
afternoon. The two end up in a cheap hotel and, although
Driggs is a married man, they begin an adventure together
with a little bit of kinky sex.
The film
begins as a wild-ride, road picture sort of comedy but
takes many twists and turns throughout the story. It
ends up with a very unexpected plot twist but that is
the beauty of this movie: It's ability to surprise.
In ways, this film is similar to Martin Scorsese's black
comedy "After Hours" in that it has a unique ability
to surprise and delight with the unexpected darker moments.
There are
some sequences in "Something Wild" that are quite risque.
Griffith displays more of her assets than we saw in
"Working Girl." And the F- word pops up occasionally.
But these things are necessary to the plot. The only
really annoying aspect of the film is it's use of really
bad raggae/pop tunes that almost became popular in the
mid-80's. But that's the only complaint that can be
made about this otherwise engaging film. I even like
Griffith here, so it's got to be good.
Note: John
Waters has a cameo as a used car salesman. John Sayles
also has one, as a motorcycle cop.
