Scary
Movie (2000)
"Scary Movie" has the funniest cum joke since "There's
Something about Mary." Of course, it also has fart jokes,
scat jokes, piss jokes, tit jokes, dick jokes, and lots
and lots of gay jokes. This is one of those... "try
anything for a laugh spoofs" and generally, very generally,
speaking, it works.
The Wayans Brothers, with Keenan Ivory behind the
cam, have concocted a spoof flick that makes fun of
just about every teem horror flick that's been released
in the past few years. The "Scream" trilogy, the "I
know What You Did" franchise, "Blair Witch Project"
and "Sixth Sense" are lampooned heavily here. There
are also nods to "Dawson's Creek," "Buffy," "The Matrix"
and "The Usual Suspects." There's nods to the "Whatsup"
commercial, "Titanic," "Armistad," and Riverdance. Sometimes
stuff works, sometimes it doesn't.
And the gay content? What's up with this? I mean,
generally, it's just damn funny. There's gay content
in almost every scene. None of it is really derogatory,
more of the "straight guy who pats other guys on the
ass" variety... But the end of the film finds a pretty
derogatory moment when the killer turns out to be killing
because he is gay and going to "start a new life" or
something like that. It doesn't make much sense. Of
course, it's not supposed to. And it also pretty much
satirizes Matthew Lillard in his original scream role.
Most of the actors have a lot of fun here. Anna Faris
is perfect as "Cindy" with a goofy eyed hamminess that
isn't too overdone. In fact, it's her ability to walk
the line between believable and ridiculous that often
makes some of the humor work. John Abrahams has fun
as her boyfriend Bobby. Dave Sheridan goofs it up as
Doofy and Shawn Wayans evokes plenty of laughter as
the seemingly gay Ray. It's all pretty well done. Everyone
tries to make the jokes and the film work.
I guess the key is your knowledge of these films.
I have only seen most of them once. And I giggled throughout
the film. If you've bought these videos, like "Scream"
and "Summer," and have watched them several times, you
might get even more of the jokes. But, alas, if you've
never seen these films, you won't get anything in "Scary
Movie."
Knowledge is power. Especially if you are going to
understand a lampoon. You have to know what the joke
is.
Notes:
Also with Cheri Oteri, Carmen Electra, Houstonian
Shannon Elizabeth ("American Pie"), Locklyn Munro ("Charmed,"
who looks far too much like Seann William Scott of "American
Pie," and "Raod Trip" fame) and David L. "Squiggy" Lander
(who is there simply to parody the fact that Henry Winkler
played a principal in one of these films).
Abrahams is also in "Texas Rangers" with James Van
Der Beek, who does a cameo in the film as himself playing
"Dawson."
Other apparent spoofs: "Friday the 13th," "Halloween,"
"Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Urban Legend."
The film uses clips from "Shakespeare in Love," the
Oscar winning comedy produced by Mirimax and the Weinsteins,
who also produced this film.
The film was known as "Scream If You Know What I Did
Last Halloween" and "Last Summer I Screamed Because
Halloween Fell on Friday the Thirteenth."
