The
Prince of Pennsylvania (1989)
Weird and flawed low-budget independent film written
and directed by the openly gay Ron Nyswaner. Keanu Reeves
stars a rebel without a cause in 90's coal miner country.
Reeves battles the hypocrisy of a mother who is having
an affair, a lover who is having and affair and a father
who thinks Oliver North is a great American.
Sure, it's pretty pretentious and silly, and Reeves,
in his early days here, can't decide whether to be goofy
or intellectual, but it's all in good fun. There are
hints of his Todd in "Parenthood," his zany airhead
in "Bill and Ted" and his street hustler in "My Own
Private Idaho."
Poetic and lyrical at times, I really liked it. Put
it with "The In Crowd" as one of those guilty pleasures
that ain't all that bad.
Note: With Fred Ward, Bonnie Bedilia and Amy Madigan.
