Mosquito (1999)
Although it is well constructed, "Mosquito" is nothing
but a tired retread of a well-worn cinematic idea. As
the title implies, and as you can imagine (if you imagine
the worst), the film is mainly seen through the eyes
of a mosquito.
Yep, and the mosquito falls in love with a girl. And
the girl has a man come over to her apartment. and the
mosquito gets jealous... and you can fill in the blanks
on the rest.
German filmmaker Frieder Wittich may just be too damn
young to know he's copying a cinematic idea that has
been wrung out so often. Don't they teach a class on
cinematic clichés? It's really a waste of talent.
Wittich's film is is technically perfect. His visuals
utilizing both POV of the mosquito and standard camera
shots are perfect. His humor is sweet and subtle. His
story is well crafted. It's a nice film to watch. But
there is absolutely nothing new about it from a story
aspect, only slightly new material from the story-telling
aspect.
