Mean Girls (2004)
For a film that's suppose to be
about how mean and nasty and bitchy teenage girls
can be to one and other, "Mean Girls" is pretty innocuous
fare. There's a little bit here and there that seem
catty in new and mischievous ways, but overall the
film is just your typical Lindsay Lohan, "let's all
be nice to one and other," juvenile, tweener, "message"
film. I suppose it was foolish to expect it to be
something like a Larry Clark film (imagine how awesome
that would be) even though the smart and wittily wry
"SNL" scribe Tina Fey wrote the film and plays a supporting
role.
In fact, there's several familiar
faces here including fellow "SNL" alumni Ana Gastyer,
Tim Meadows, Amy Pohler, and Molly Shannon as well
as stars like Lacey Chabert and no one seems to be
able to add any spice to the proceedings. This film
just sort of lays there and does pretty much everything
you expect it to. At least it's got hottie Jonathan
Bennett in enough scenes to keep us teenage girls
somewhat interested.
"Mean Girls?" Hmmm... Seems like
"Slightly Obnoxious Girls" might be a more appropriate
title.
Notes:
Based on a novel called "Queen Bees
and Wannabees.
The film was nominated for a bunch
of Teen Choice Awards and won a few.
The gothic girl is named Janis Ian
which is the real name of a lesbian singer who had
a hit song in the 70's called "At Seventeen." The
song is used in the film.
Viewed on DVD in December 2004.
