Louise
Brooks: Looking for Lulu
This
biographical documentary of Louise Brooks, the enchanting
silent era film star is an interesting overview of her
life, but it serves only as a preliminary point for
her story. Sadly, the most interesting time of her life,
her work in Germany with G.W. Pabst, is made only a
footnote here. In this time, she made two of the most
controversial films of all time, "Lulu" and "Diary of
a Lost Girl." The latter is only mentioned once. There
isn't even a still from the film shown. It's a sad omission
in this documentary.
The
best thing about this film is that not only does it
feature a plethora of film clips from Brooks' work,
but also several segments from a 1980's documentary
with the lively and interesting actress, well in her
70's. Her demeanor in these segments tells the entire
story.
Narrated
by Shirley MacLaine, a poor choice, Brooks' story is
only partially told here. There is so much more to know
and learn about. This just whets your appetite.
