Nutty
Professor II: The Klumps (2000)
Everything that was fresh and funny and unique about
"The Nutty Professor," Eddie Murphy's 1996 outing where
he plays multiple characters, is gone in this sequel.
This film is a rotten piece of flesh just begging to
be bagged and buried. It's a horrid and ridiculous film.
Murphy again plays the entire Klump family, with the
exception of the teenage boy. All of the Klumps are
fat. Fat people are funny. Why? In Murphy's opinion
it is because they fart. You know, fart jokes are really
lame. But somehow, in the original, Murphy and director
Tom Shadyac made them funny. Here in the sequel they
are horrid. In the original, it was just a simple familial
setting around the dinner table - it was real. And the
reality of the fart jokes made them amusing and fresh.
Here, the fart jokes are carried out with the intricacy
of a professional blueprint, and they fall flat. It's
just insipid. When an entire fart joke is set up so
that one of the Klumps can get the Heimlich maneuver,
fart and ignite a fire from the flame on a birthday
cake, you know that Murphy and his cohorts here are
trying far too hard.
There are also dick jokes, tit jokes, piss jokes,
shit jokes, and vomit jokes. This is really base, really
lowbrow humor. Trouble is, it's been done so much better
by so many other folks lately. We expect a lot from
lowbrow humor nowadays. The Farrely brothers and "American
Pie" sort of have the lock on gross jokes. At least,
thank God, there isn't a cum joke in "The Klumps." We
do, however, have to watch Murphy, pretending to be
a really old woman, french kiss someone and (it's implied)
go down on someone. Gross. This isn't funny, it's nauseating.
And what is sweet - weird, but sweet, Janet Jackson
doing in this tripe? She tries desperately to cover
up her complete horror at what is going on around her
but, God bless her, she just isn't that talented. She
is cute and sweet and as innocent looking as hell, so
she almost evokes some emotion from the audience. Almost.
Part of the problem surely lies with director Peter
Segal. He is way out of his league here. His most notable
film comedy prior to this being "Tommy Boy." This remake
is horribly directed. Segal seems at a complete loss
to make anything work. The film's special effects are
obvious, the acting is lame, the script is putrid, the
music cues are overblown and Murphy is allowed to go
all over the place. It's disgraceful.
I cannot imagine anyone laughing at anything in this
film. Unless, of course, they are 10 years old or have
an IQ of a 10 year old. This is the most raunchy and
repulsive PG-13 movie I have ever seen. It's not that
I think children should be shielded from bad language
or sexual innuendo. I think they should be shielded
from bad movies and horrible writing however. "The Klumps"
has nothing but this to offer. Murphy should offer a
public apology.
What a repulsive, retarded, ignorant piece of shit.
Note:
Larry Miller and Jamal Mixon reprise their roles from
the original. Also with Anna Maria Horsford.
Written by Steve Odenkirk, Barry Blaustien, David
Sheffield, Chuck Weitz, and Paul Weitz.
Rick Baker is credit for Make-Up Effects as he was
in the original. Shadyac, Murphy, and Brian Grazer act
as producers here. Jerry Lewis, who owns the rights
to his original 1963 version of the film, which he also
wrote, is also credited as Executive Producer.
