How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
Angela Bassett is as wonderful as ever in this adaptation
of a Toni Morrison novel. Lengthy and expansive, the
film tells the story of Stella, a 40 year old stock
broker who goes on a vacation in Jamaica and falls for
a 20-year-old chef. The film is interesting because
it explores more than just the age difference in the
relationship but also the social, economic and cultural
differences. It also has interesting subtext with Stella
relationship with her son, her sisters and friends.
The most fun in all of this comes from Whoopi Goldberg
who almost plays herself. Her seemingly improvised dialogue
is full of humor and wit that is often fall-down funny.
Even in her character's darkest moments, we find ourselves
laughing at what she shares with us.
The chemistry between Bassett and Taye Diggs, who
plays her younger love interest, is quite nice. We like
them as a couple, even though we also see the problems
inherent in their relationship and we want them to succeed.
The film is beautiful to look at with the wondrous
Jamaican landscape often accentuating the film. We often
feel like were on vacation ourselves. It's a unique
and insightful film that is also funny, beautiful and
fulfilling.
