Elevator World
(1999)
For anyone who would claim that you cannot make an
amusing, effective, and professional short completely
on computer, there is "Elevator World." Even better
than that, the film is really rather simple. It has
no characters, in the traditional sense, and no story,
really. Yet the film will make you chuckle with knowing
delight.
Mitchell Rose offers up a short essay on the "spatial
politics" of the elevator. He uses charming yet simple
computer generated graphics to illustrate his amusing
and pointed remarks. It's really a fun film, one that
all filmmakers should see. It shows how a simple idea
can become a fully realized and clever short.
Don't be surprised if you see this popping up at festivals
and TV shows all over. It's not only groundbreaking,
it's funny as heck.
Notes:
Rose is a choreographer. The film grew out of a slide
show presentation he developed to go between dances
at programs he worked on over 10 years ago.
The film was made on a Mac and took about 10 weeks
to create. The budget for the film "was about 20 bucks
- a roll of film for the photograph," claims Rose.
Rose also narrates the film from a script he wrote.
