Coffee
Date (2001)
Seemingly pretty typical, "Coffee Date" is nonetheless
an amusing and fun short. The film finds two guys, one
gay and one straight, waiting at a trendy LA coffee
bar for their dates. The straight one is a bit uncomfortable
at first, and oddly does not question why his Internet
girlfriend would want to meet in a gay coffeehouse.
He makes some typical straight guy comments and is taken
to task by a flitty but nice queen who is also waiting
for a date.
After much talk, the two find that they have some
things in common, then figure out that, of course, they
are there to meet each other. The straight guy's brother
has set him up, posting his ad on the Internet in a
"men seeking men" section. It doesn't hurt that his
on-line romantic interest, who happens to be the gay
guy in his presence, is named Kelly.
The two decide to see a movie together and then head
home, surprising the awaiting brother by running into
the straight's bedroom together holding hands. Yes it's
silly and trite and perhaps even been done before, but
it was still cute and well executed. This film may have
some shaky acting and some standard dialogue, but I
couldn't hold that against it. When all was said and
done, it was just a nice little film about how a gay
guy won a straight friend by being himself and allowing
the straight guy to be himself as well. How can you
argue with a fun little film like that?
