Black
Mask (1999)
Silly
but interesting Hong Kong actioner which finds Jet Li
playing a mild mannered librarian who is actually a
"altered" human made superman in an experiment gone
awry. When his former fellow "altered" humans, led by
a Yoko Ono male lookalike, become bad guys in an impossible-to-figure-
out plot twist, Li drops his books and dons a "Black
Mask" (which looks like it's made out of aluminum siding)
to take
on the bad guys.
The film weaves between action sequences and ludicrous
plot exposition but finds moments to poke fun at it's
own campy brand of humor. When the action takes place
it is generally engaging and bloody. Li's charm makes
the slower plot points acceptable. All in all, good
old Hong Kong action and campy "dubbed" dialogue combing
to make a fun picture. Nothing too special though.
