Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) (AKA
Austin Powers 3)
The best fricken Austin Powers film yet.
I don't want to spoil all the cameos and all the
spoofs that this new Austin Powers film contains. They
are too delightful to ruin and, anyway, every other
film critic on the planet will do that for you. You've
probably already had it ruined for you. Suffice it to
say that they are numerous and hilarious.
What works here is all the old returning characters
from the franchise. Scotty, Mini-Me, Frau Farbissina,
Powers, Evil and even Fat Bastard. The new characters
played by others are also fun, like Foxey Cleopatra
(Beyonce Knowles - presumably no relation to Harry),
Powers' father Nigel (Michael Caine) and the continuous
cameos at the film's beginning and end.
What doesn't work is the new character of Goldmember.
He's dumb. Mike Myers tries to outdo the repulsiveness
of Fat Bastard by having Goldmember pick off his flaking
skin, sniff it and eat it. It is repugnant. Not funny
at all.
Regardless, it's pretty simple: If you liked the
first films, then you'll like this one. It may be simply
more of the same stuff, but Myers and director Jay Roach
make it all seem fresh and new. And if something isn't
working, the team is on to new stuff before you can
get bored or bothered about it. Basically, I was never
bored and laughed my ass off. The scenes with Powers,
Evil, and Exposition as teenagers really made me bust
a gut. The kids here playing the characters are awesome
and they are obviously having the times of their lives
(like the A-list actors who do cameos). Who wouldn't
want to be in an Austin Powers film? It's probably about
the only thing better in the world than watching one.
Now all I want to know is when is "Austin Powers
4" coming out?
Note:
SPOILER: Okay - got to give kudos to the prison
scene rap video spoof. This really cracked me up.
Ming Tea, Meyers band in the film franchise, perform
a new song. Foxey Cleopatra performs a song based on
a KC and the Sunshine band tune. The end credits feature
a cool cover of the Stones' "Miss You."
A scene from an old Michael Caine film is used
as a flashback.
The film had problems with MGM over the title "Goldmember,"
which is, of course, a spoof of MGM's franchise James
Bond film title, "Goldfinger." MGM made New Line stop
advertising the film with this title for about three
months in early 2002. A settlement was reach where New
Line agreed to show the trailer for the new Bond film,
"Die Another Day," on the Austin Powers film in theaters.
