American Pie (1999)

Funny and bold, "American Pie" is a 90's teen sex comedy. A sort of "Porky's" meets "The Graduate" for the new millennium. The only important thing is, though, that it's funny as hell.

The teenaged actors in the piece are all basically unknowns. That just makes their plight more believable. The only recognizable face, to all of us adults anyway, is SCTV alum Eugene Levy, who takes a marvellous turn here playing a nerdy dad trying to be supportive and open minded toward his high-school senior son in the sex-obsessed 90's.

The film deals with it all, condoms, Internet webcams, porn, virginity, masturbation, oral sex, bathroom usage, you name it. It gets down and dirty. Wisely it avoids gay sex except for one, lame, silly comment.  Watching the quartet of 18 year old males here endure the trials and tribulations of teen sexuality here is both  hilarious and heartwarming - without once ever being preachy or schmaltzy. It tells it's story without narration or pontification. This is a smooth and assured presentation.

Note: Also with Jason Biggs, Natasha Lyonne.

The film uses way too much top 40 pop music as if trying to sell a soundtrack rather than accentuate what is going on on screen.

The title "American Pie" is a registered trademark by Don McLean.
