Amelie (2001) (AKA "Le Fabuleux destin
d'Amelie Poulain")
Okay, I was very tired when I was watching "Amelie."
I couldn't keep my eyes open. And even though Jean Pierre
Jeunet's first film without Mark Caro is visually stunning,
the plot is so threadbare as to be nonexistent. And,
rather sadly, we've seen most of it before.
A silly love interest film, the plot has the titular
heroine searching for a mysterious man and then engaging
him in a mystery so he may find her. Amelie's weird
insight into adventure comes when she finds a long hidden
box of junk in her apartment. She searches for the boy
(now man) who must have hidden it in the 50's. When
she returns it to him anonymously, and watches his reaction,
she begins a sort of odyssey into mucking about in people's
lives without them knowing it and watching the results
from afar. She even hoodwinks her own father by sending
his garden gnome around the world. Photographic reports
come back of the diminutive ceramic figure world travels
causing the ageing man much wondering.
Visually stunning, the film can never really overcome
its rather tired and thin plot. It's hard to denounce
the charm of actress Audrey Tautou, who plays the main
character. I liked Amelie (the character) but I wished
she would stop screwing around and get to the point.
She chases after this guy she has a crush on and then
runs away when he gets close. It gets rather tiresome.
"Amelie" like one of those charming and romantic
French songs played on the accordion. You know, it really
is charming and romantic at first. But after a while
it just begins to bore you, or worse yet, work your
nerves.
