All About Eve (1950)

"All About Eve" is considered one of the best films of all time by many people. It's one of those movies I've always wanted to see, but never got around to. A bout of insomnia remedied that problem this week. I finally saw it on one of those classic movie cable channels.

It's a damn fine film alright and should be considered a gay classic. Why gay? Well, there is an underlying feeling of lesbianism running throughout much of the female characters here. The moments between them, at times, is quite innuendo - ladden. And then theres the flaming George Sanders as Addison DeWitt. He's obviously gay and the script all but says so. In one scene it skirts around this idea with the delicacy of Irish lace. And, for some reason, there's just an underlying feeling of gay cattiness in the film. Bette Davis' Margot is simply a great bitch. We love her - LOVE her! She is so outrageous and so over-the-top. It's just damn fun to watch. She seems to be playing an overt caricature of herself. When Bette blurts out the classic "Fasten your seatbelts. it's going to be a bumpy ride" line, I practically burst into flames myself.

"All About Eve" is a wonderful intelligent, subtle comedy in the tradition of Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder. It came from Joseph Mankiewicz. With it's continuing drama and it's wonderfully brilliant "Twilight Zone" ending, "all about Eve" is a classic. No wonder it was the big highlight of the 1950 Oscars. It truly is a classic.
