54
(1998)
This is
about 1/10th the film that "The Last Days of disco"
is. At least, it has hunky Ryan Phillippe and adorable
Brekin Meyer shirtless and in cute little short pants
for a lot of the film. It also has Mike Meyers performing
perfectly in an awesome role as Studio 54 owner Steve
Rubell. But the plot, direction and visuals here totally
defeat everything good the film. Worse yet - there isn't
one interesting or exciting music or dance number. It
sucks. A documentary about Rubell or about Studio 54
would be much more interesting.
The low
point of the film comes when it tries to be poignant
and ironic but only succeeds in killing off a little
old lady. Yuck!
Note:
The film
had a two-volume soundtrack with over 30 songs that
ran about 130 minutes total, about 40 minutes longer
than the actual film. Included were a mix of disco classics
where someone said "Studio 54" over the transitions
and a newly recorded disco version of Gordon Lightfoot's
"If You Could Read My Mind"!?!
