A Poem

words (for j.k.)

If I could write by hand

One thousand thank you’s

In one thousand journals

And one thousand I love you’s

In one thousand more

It would only half express

The joy that you have brought

I might also write

Of your flaxen hair,

Your smile like the sun,

Your tenuous kisses,

Your tender love

And that would still leave unspoken

What has truly passed between us

If words could be love, made sentient,

Than this page would jump

Into your arms

And sigh, Kiss you tenderly

And be consumed in the fire

That is your mouth

But black on white

Markings on ice

Can never say enough

Like the I love you’s that I mouth,

And the breaths of passion that I sigh,

These words are insignificant reward

For a soul enlivened

By your gracious gaze

In the fragile night

Agliff 2002

The Notes from Austin column is a little short this time out because much of the past couple weeks was spent at Austin’s Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (Agliff). Check out our exclusive coverage including film reviews and my personal festival journal.

In the Dirty City

Went to Emo’s the other night to check out our friend Kevin’s band, In the Dirty City. Kevin is a really attractive guy but kind of egotistical and pompous. Still, I like him and I was interested to see the show. This was on the day after Labor Day and the day after Agliff ended. So, the place was fairly uncrowded as everyone had blown their wad over the 3 day weekend. I, myself, was spent as well.

I took Melissa to the show, since it was all ages, as Emo’s always is. We met our friend Ashton and his roommate Mike there. Melissa has fucked both of them and it’s an interesting situation.

In the Dirty City played and they were interesting. Kevin was either far too shy or too nervous, however, and they came across as a band in desperate search of a lead singer. The band had some interesting songs but Kevin’s vocals were far too wan and pale, unlike his real persona. In a way they reminded me of JJ72.

Kevin was wearing glasses and he looked like a really cute, teenage David Byrne. But his stage presence offered up none of the assuredness that Byrne was eventually able to muster. Kevin’s look and stage presence was more out of the “Feel sorry for me. I’m smart and cute and unappreciated” mold. The glasses also reminded me of that stupid thing cute guys in band’s do where they want to be noticed for their musical skills rather than their looks. This is dumb as fuck. Rock has always been about cock and will always be about cock. For a cute guy not to use his looks to his advantage is just stupid. Get the people interested in you and your band by whatever means necessary, then wow them with your talent. That’s the key. (This is as much for Kevin as for a hundred other musicians I’ve known).

Anyway, there also seemed to be some sort of technical problem with Kevin’s guitar. It didn’t sound exactly right when he did this sort of Frippertronic-esque guitar solo things. I’m not sure what was up with that. All in all, I imagine the band was rather upset that their set didn’t go better than it did. I’d still like to see them play again but Kevin has really got to step up to the mike. And they need to play in a venue with a better sound set-up, like 710 or Flamingo even.

Anyway, I got shitfaced drunk and even bought a round of shots for these two girls that I barely know. I also tipped the bartender ten bucks for no real reason. I liked Kelvin (the band) quite a bit when they played although I was pretty trashed by this point and didn’t pay that close attention. I was also macking on Ashton, so.

We saw our friend Nick, whom I hardly know actually. He used to work at Thundercloud but now I think he works at Central Market. Melissa thinks he’s cute. (He is).

We went back to Ashton and Mike’s place and had even more drinks and stuff. I got more fucked-up. Somehow Melissa chose to go to bed with Mike while Ashton and I ended up at the pool. (There was no damn hot tub). Ashton and I talked for almost an hour but for the life of me I could not tell you one thing that was said. Well, okay, one: “No. I’m not going to sleep with you Lodger. It’s not going to happen.” I think it was Ashton who said this.

We got back to the apartment and Melissa came out of the bedroom and said Mike was being an asshole and she was ready to go. I still don’t know the real story, but she had bruises on her wrists the next day.

Shooting more Lube

Shot an episode of “Lube TV” the other night and Melissa brought her roommate Tobias over. I went and picked up Ashton and Tobias rode along while Mark and Melissa got set up for the show.

Tobias said he wanted to kick Mike’s ass for what he did to Melissa but when we got over there, and Mike was there, he shook his hand and then played around with his guitar. I thought maybe it was going to get crazy, cause Melissa has told me that Tobias can be kind of an asshole (boy can he), but nothing happened. I was saddened and relieved. I don’t really dig drama too much.

We stopped at DQ and the subject of piercings came up. Tobias has a big one (piercing, I mean) and Ashton just got his done recently. When Ashton told Tobias that his was a 10 gauge, Tobias called him a pussy. I mentioned that it was odd that my friend Johnny Oh! wanted to meet Tobias because he has a piercing and Johnny’s not into that and Tobias made sure to tell me that he “fucks pussy.” Straight guys are so funny.

I was in a blah mood and the subject of Starseeds came up and my problem with Morrissey the waiter. (His real name is Chris, I have learned). I think I wrote about that in the last “Notes” but I don’t remember. Anyway, it’s a long story and I don’t even want to get into it now. Tobias tried to make me talk about it and I didn’t want to and he pissed me off asking about it. It was stupid. I was pissed for the rest of the night.

Oh, and when the subject of piercings came up, and Tobias mentioned that his was a 2 or 4 gauge, he said something like, “I could probably break a plate with it.” Somehow the subject of him doing that on “Lube TV” came up and he said he would.

Then, somehow, during the taping of the show, we decided that it would be even cooler if he broke an egg with his piercing. See, John Christensen, the late founder of Lube TV, was into Kenneth Anger and saw some old short of his where someone rubs (I think it’s) mustard all over his chest. John’s film’s often feature someone rubbing condiments on their body, usually himself. There is also a lot of eggs being broken by body parts. (I have heard there is video somewhere of John sticking an egg up his ass, but I’ve never seen it). John once said that “The yolk is the lube.” So, an egg seemed far more appropriate than a plate. We set up the egg and the camera and Tobias did it. (It took two takes because the egg fell in the first one, even though it did break, and it looked bad on camera). There was a shot of Tobias holding broken yolk in his hand that looked hot as fuck!

Tobias left after we filmed the episode and Mark, Melissa and I went to Magnolia Cafe (not Starseeds) for a late dinner. We talked a lot about stuff, especially dreams. It’s always interesting to hear your friends’ dreams (yet hardly ever interesting to hear stranger’s dreams) and realize how different from your own they can be. That was really cool.

Ashton flirted with me a little and I was in a blah mood so it seemed like I was upset. Melissa told him it was cruel to tease me like that. I was just in a bad mood, so it wasn’t necessarily so much cruel as typical and boring, really. Ashton really needs to loosen up a bit. He wouldn’t even take off his shirt during the taping of the show. What a prude.
