THE AUSTIN GAY & LESBIAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (aGLIFF)
presents a special screening!

- OUT OF THE PAST Where: The Arbor Theater, 10,000 Research
Blvd. Admission: $5.00 / $4.00 aGLIFF members. Tickets go

Out of the Past traces the emergence of gay men and lesbians
in American history through the eyes of a young woman coming
to terms with herself and her place in the world. The documentary
explores the critical link between knowledge of history and
knowledge of self.
Director Jeff Dupre will be present to introduce the film
and answer questions afterwards. Mr. Dupre is available for
phone interviews. Preview tapes also available.
Winner -- Audience Award for Best Documentary Sundance
Film Festival, The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival,
Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
Voices: Stephen Spinella, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cherry Jones,
Edward Norton, Leland Gantt
The film tells the story of Kelli Peterson, a teenager from
Utah who founded a Gay-Straight Alliance at her high school
in 1996. Her efforts provoked a statewide backlash as the
school board and, ultimately, the state legislature tried
to find a way to keep the group from meeting. Kelli was thrust
into the national spotlight as she and her friends waged an
intense public struggle to secure the right to meet on campus
like any other student group.
Out of the Past uses Kelli's story to illuminate the history
of gays and lesbians in America, highlighting some of the
more universal aspects of that experience and making otherwise
remote historical material accessible and relevant to a general
audience. In an interview and in conversation with her parents
and friends, Kelli discusses the isolation she experienced,
her decision to come out, and her fight for equality. Her
reflections frame stories of historical figures whose lives
speak to, and resonate with, the themes she addresses.
Award-Winning Austin Animators Host Premiere of their Latest
Short Films Austin animators Lance Myers and Walt Holcombe will
premiere their latest animated short films, "The Astronomer"
and "The Courtship of Sniffy LaPants," on Saturday, April 21
at 9 p.m. The films will screen at the Ritz Upstairs, 320 E.
6th Street in Austin, Texas, (512) 474-9574. Also appearing
will be two Austin combos, each as original as the films themselves:
the theremin-piano duo of Blair Bovbjerg and Cathy Brigham,
and Adult Rodeo. Tickets are available at the door.
Employing traditional animation techniques, Myers and Holcombe
created their moving and unique visions entirely on a computer
with the help of Flash and Adobe AfterEffects. While the speed
and efficiency of computer-aided animation allowed each artist
to single-handedly complete the work of an entire production
team, the results are as beautiful and elegant as a hand-animated
production.
The films feature stellar original scores composed by Austin's
Golden Arm Trio and Erik the Butcher (with members of Tosca).
Walt Holcombe won the prestigious comics industry award,
the Eisner, for his 1998 graphic novel, The King of Persia.
He also created the comic series Poot for Fantagraphics Books.
Numerous American, European and Japanese magazines have featured
Holcombe and his unusual yet endearing work. As an animator
for Sapient (formerly Human Code), his animated work has appeared
in game titles for Nickelodeon and Disney.
Lance Myers began traditional cell animation at Austin's
premier animation studio, Heart of Texas Productions. He contributed
to the numerous feature film productions, including Space
Jam, Prince of Egypt and Quest for Camelot. He presently is
senior animator for Sapient (formerly Human Code), a multimedia
studio. Lance fronted the band Gal's Panic and, currently,
he is lead singer of the Playdoh Squad. "The Astronomer" has
been showcased in both the SXSW
2001 Film Festival and the California SUN Animation Festival
2001.

From Cinemaker:
2000 was a strong year for Cinemaker. Nearly 100 short super
8 films were produced for Cinemaker festivals. The process
of selecting the films for the compilation tape took longer
than expected as it was hard to choose only 20 from the fourty
strong films we received. But finally, here is the list.
Congratulations to all the filmmakers who's films were selected
for the tape. Stay tuned for release party information!

Mark Lovell, a member of the up-and-comming "Bedlam Faction",
a splinter theater group that recently broke off the lauded
Austin Free Shakespeare Society, recently wrote to me to tell
me of their next production of Ben Johnson's "Volpone."
Says Lovell, "It features a bunch of us who are interested
in doing the theater thing as something more serious than
an advanced hobby, and contains many of the guys you may remember
from AFSS, including Andy Bond, Robert Deike, me, Emily Abrams,
Shanna Smith, and more (I don't want to forget anyone, but
it's getting late, and I can't remember everybody right now.
. . ) However, we are charging now - like 8 bucks, which ain't
exactly free, but for live theater, it ain't bad."
"Volpone" runs from April 19th to May 12th at the Off Center,
which is located off Hidalgo,

Notes: Why
did Agliff, the Austin Gay Film Festival people, pick "Reel
Deal" host Corey Coleman to host their Oscar night party? He
isn't openly gay as far as I know. Aren't there enough talented
and interesting gay people in Austin? Couldn't Agliff find someone
gay in town to host the party. Isn't there a rather large and
hilarious website author and cable access host who would be
better for the job?
