Notes from Austin, Volume 2 #9

Hey kids - check out our coverage of SXSW. It's taking up a lot of my time this week, so "Notes" is pretty compact.

Thursday night, went over to Rich and Kelly's and showed Rich and our friend Matt the video that we made. Rich thought it was too slow. My work is very slowly paced. I know that. I'm more about image and "moments" than story and plot, that's for sure.

Rich pissed me off a bit by offering me a role as a dead whore in the student film that he and Matt are going to make and then rescending it. He was really kidding around but I wanted that role! Don't fuck with an actor's emotions like that. Seriously, it made me realize how much I want to act and how much I love the process. Right now, anyway.

Kelly came home from work and we headed to the Alamo for the "Twin Peaks" Extravaganza. We dropped Matt off first as he had an early class.

Tim, the owner of the Alamo, was dressed as Laura Palmer, all wrapped in plastic. It was awesome. My idea of costume was to write "Let's Rock" on my hand in magic marker. They had a costume contest and I ttok some pictures. A friend of Rich and Kelly's, who works at I (heart) Video won. He had a little plaster mask like Lynch's son wears in the film.

The place was packed and the Alamo seemed a little understaffed. It's probably hard to get college kids to work late and it was also the beginning of Spring Break week. The service was awesome anyway. And the food was great as usual. This place is my favorite place in Austin. I'm glad they have some SXSW shows there. The out-of-towners will get to see what they are missing!

We watched "Fire Walk With Me" and I was in heaven. It's the first time I'd seen it since it came out. It's a masterpiece of pretentiousness and exaggerated emotions. sheryl Lee's performance is remarkable. She jitters and bugs her eyes like there is no tomorrow. It's riveting. I loved it. I was in heaven throughout. It's also a very funny film. It's truly black comedy. The college kids were eating it up like crazy.

Of course, a black comedy about incestuous child molestation can't be funny forever and the film becomes bogged down in it's own plot and pretense. But I still loved it. "Twin Peaks" is the base of my artistic sensibilities. Lynch just taps into things that work for me. I love it's arty pretense. It's oddball humor. It's insane moments. Much as I love the black and white avant gaurd expressionism of "The Elephant Man." These are two styles that affect me deeply. I am not sure why. It's amazing that they both come from one man, Lynch.

There was a short intermission, by this time it was well after 2am, and then they began to roll the first episode. About an hour into it, Rich and Kelly were both asleep (sawing logs? - haha) and I decided I should get them home. Kelly just doesn't sleep enough. It worries me. His time is so full. It's bursting at the seams. Rich too, although I think he manages far better. It's sad when spending time with people you truly like makes you feel like your hurting them somehow. Aw, they're young. They'll manage.

"Twin Peaks" is an American treasure. There will be a second round of TV episodes on April 9th at the Alamo. They will begin a bit earlier in the evening. I can't wait!
