Notes
from Austin Volume 2 #7
Well, it's been a pretty slow week. There were some events
here and there but either, work, lack of sleep or lack of
funding kept me from checking them out.
I missed the "Sargasso Manuscript" at the Alamo because
I overslept. What a pain. I also decided to skip the Cinemaker
Co-op meeting this month and check out some flicks instead.
And I didn't have enough cash to hang out at Casino's Monday
night even though the drinks are dirt cheap. Austin is one
expensive city!
I did spend an enormous amount of time at my computer though
and you will find in this "Notes" many excerpts from the copious
amount of e-mail I received. Try not to get any on you while
wading through it.
I did find time to stop by the Alamo. Tim and Karrie are
on vacation again. I'll have to ask them what they've been
up to next time I see them. I picked up my tickets for the
"Twin Peaks" midnight extravaganza on 3/9.
. NO DANCE, a film festival that travels around the world,
has a 3-day booth in the convention center for SXSW, and will
be screening Bob Ray's "Rock Opera" on Monday night March
13th.
Rock Opera will have its New York premiere on Saturday,
March 11th at 11:30pm as part of the New York Underground
Film Festival, a second screening is scheduled for Sunday
night, March 12th at 9:45pm. Both screenings will take place
at the Anthology Film Archives.
A handful of Rock Opera misfits will be bringing a dose
of Texas style mayhem up to the Big Apple for the premiere
event including director, Bob Ray, the star of the film, Jerry
Don Clark, and Art Director, Tony Linder.
Be sure to check out Bob Ray as he talks about music and
film on a panel discussion on Saturday, March 11th with Steven
Beer, Audry McNight, someone from ASCAP and others.

AD&D PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES ZOMBIE BY ZOMBWEST FILM FESTIVAL
LOCATION
INTERACTIVE PROGRAM AND GAMING CINEMATICS ADDED TO SCHEDULE
The Second Annual Zombie By Zombwest Film Festival, the
ONLY alternative film festival held during South By Southwest,
makes it's appearance this year at the South Austin punk rock/sports
bar Trophy's. "We were looking for a venue that had some of
the real flavor of Austin," festival organizer Nathan McGinty
comments. "And you can't get any more flavorful than Trophy's."
Among some of the films that will be shown are: "Sploosh",
featuring Brendan Beiser from the Fox program, The X-Files;
"Harry Knuckles and the Treasure of the Aztec Mummy" a recent
winner at the Slamdance Film Festival, and "Reign of the Dead".
A complete listing of the films and contact information for
the production companies can be found on the ZXZW festival
website at http://www.flojo.com/undeadfest.
After the film program (beginning at 7pm), a number of local
Austin bands will perform, headlined by local bad-boy punkers,
The Chumps.
Despite some recent controversy with SXSW, McGinty stresses
that the two festivals can still work together. "The South
By Southwest Film Festival serves a great purpose in that
it showcases the work of some of the filmmakers that can't
get into ZXZW."
Also new to the festival this year will be an Interactive
Gaming/Virtual Cybernetic World available for festival goers.
"We're going to setup an Atari 2600 on one of the TV's. We've
got two cartridges: Combat and Pong. We're hoping to get Missile
Command soon. It's very exciting.", notes AD&D Productions
Systems Administrator Tom Hoover.

BTW - I have seen a few minutes of "Harry Knuckles" and
it is hilarious and cool. A great homage to zombie flicks,
70's detective flicks, 70's dubbed foreign imports, and more.
Josh Grace, who did the special effects for the film, may
be in attendance.
The writer/director of the short, "The Closet", which was
shown as part of Slamdance's Anarchy site is Shawn Schepps.
You may recognize that name from writing credits on ENCINO
MAN & SON-IN-LAW. Schepp's has just directed her first feature
entitled "KAT & ALLISON" starring Jamie Gertz. It premieres
for distribs in March.
"Central Garden," one of the sweetest short films I saw in
Park City (except for it's typical ending), has been picked
up for on-line viewing by AtomFilms.

The Agency, a band featuring filethirteen contributor Jason
Lee and "Sweet Thing" director Mark David, was going to be
taking March off from gigging to write some new material.
As always, though, things don't work out as planned. As Jason
recently wrote me...
"We thought we'd be taking March off from gigging, but we
were sorely mistaken. The next scheduled Agency show will
be at Manuel's on Congress for yet another "What I Like About
You" party on the 10th. To the best of my knowledge, it's
a live performance of the soundtrack for that movie, and not
an Agency show in the strictest sense. Word is, we'll be joined
by some of the outstanding musicians who collaborated on the
soundtrack, such as: Danny Levin, MC Truth & DJ Shaw, Bob
Schneider from The Scabs, James Speer, Jeff Moeller, Lisa
Richards, and David Craig & Stinky Del Negro from Solid Gold
40.
"Looks like we'll be playing the Longhorn Lodge during SXSW.
I'll write again as soon as I get confirmation on the date."
Thanks for the update Jason. In the meantime, those hungry
for an Agency fix can check out our streaming video of their
show in Park City to hold you over.
Speaking of Jason Lee, he is trying to line up funding for
his feature documentary on karaoke fanatics worldwide - Austin,
L.A., New York, Montreal, Fort William (Scotland), Paris,
Amsterdam, Prague and Tokyo.
Mark David will be his cameraman and co-producer. William
(who wrote the music to "Sweet Thing" with Mark) is the sound
man. These guys will be the North American crew. The European
crew is headed up by Barry Hutchison, whom Jason describes
as, "A Scottish freak of monumental proportions." Hutchison
designed the League of Supervillains Website, which, if you
haven't seen it, is great: http://www.leagueofsupervillains.com
Jason is as big a karaoke fan and has wanted to do the documentary
for upwards of 2 years. Maybe I should introduce him to my
friend Obi. He used to be a huge karaoke freak until he got
himself a real band.
Since Slamdance, the short film "MISS GENTILBELLE" has had
an extremely successful NY premiere last week, and has received
it's first review!
Film Threat.com gives Miss Gentilbelle "Four stars...an
unnerving and powerful film from Tara M. Miele...rugged and
disturbing...LaMer is terrifying...Rutherford is equally strong
as her emerging foil..." To see the whole review, check out
Filmthreat.com and search for "Miss Gentilbelle".
If you haven't yet seen the "unnerving and powerful film"
then your chance is coming. See it at Saturday 7pm, March
5th at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival! And,
if you can't make it all the way up to SB, you can look for
it later in March on den.net accompanied by a two-part documentary
on the filmmaker's trials and tribulations at Slamdance!!
I get a lot of my info from Shannon Owens at the Cinemaker
Co-Op office. This is a great resource and Shannon makes sure
any member who wants it gets her e-mails. You should go to

From: FireDogLA@aol.com I need your help. I've just started
working on a show called "Going Home" and I need to find some
people who are...going home. We're doing 65 episodes and so
we need 65 travelers. We're looking for people who are returning
to childhood homes and their hometowns. The reason >for the
trip can be almost anything - anniversary (a big one like
heir parent's 50th), class reunion, military service at sea,
announcing an engagement, the birth of a baby, the house they
grew up in is being sold, your grandmother is turning 100,
holidays, made it big and are finally returning home, boot
camp, family reunion, they just walked across the entire US
of A! Etc., etc., etc.
We will cover the airfare. If you know of ANYONE (yourselves
included) who is heading home (domestic travel only - maybe
Mexico and Canada) for any reason in the next 12 - 14 months
(yes, it's a long gig) please have them call me at work. That
number is 323/851-2333 ext. 287. Please forward this email
(or at least the one sheet which follows) to all of your friends
and ask them to do the same.
Following this information is a one-sheet describing the
show. Read it if you'd like but most of the info. is stated
above. Thanks for all the help I know you're going to provide.
I really do appreciate it.
Home is where the heart is on "Going Home"
Pie Town Productions, producers of the hit show "House Hunters,"
is bringing a new heartwarming show to Home & Garden Television.
"Going Home" is a half-hour long program that follows real-life
people returning to their hometowns and their childhood homes.
Each episode of "Going Home" is told from the point-of-view
of the traveler. We follow him or her on the journey back
home for a special event. We will first join them as they
prepare for the trip to learn how they feel about returning
home. After arriving in their hometown we will find out if
it is the same great place they remember. Our traveler is
then reunited with family and friends and finally we all take
part in the big 'reason for going home' event! Perhaps a high
school reunion or a milestone birthday celebration will be
our focus. A family reunion or a childhood friend's wedding
is also a wonderful reason to travel home. The sale of a family
home or completion of military boot camp could be the motivation
for a trip back to our roots.
"Going Home" provides viewers a rare opportunity to experience
what returning home means for people from all walks of life
and from various backgrounds. In every episode our cameras
will capture the emotional re-connection, the joy and the
warmth of what we call home.
"Going Home" is shooting throughout the year. We may be
traveling to your area soon. If you know of anyone who is
going home for the holidays, to announce an engagement, for
a new birth or for many of the other reasons we all want to
head home, please contact us. We'd love to hear from you!
