from Austin, Volume 2 #28
Hollywood
News
This week Carmike theaters, a very large chain, filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They do not own any theaters in the
Austin area. Check out our special feature, "Clash
of the Cinema Titans" for more on the current state of
exhibition in America.
Latest Hollywood news bites:
Austin fave Owen Wilson will co-star with director Ben Stiller
in the comedy "Zoolander," about a naive male supermodel.
Angelina Jolie is in talks to star opposite Kevin Costner
in director Oliver Stone's "Beyond Borders."
Hottie Anne Heche will star as a hospital administrator
in "John Q," playing opposite Denzel Washington and Robert
Duvall.
Minnie Driver will star in Disney's "High Heels and Lowlifes,"
playing a nurse who blackmails a group of bank robbers into
sharing their bounty. First, we'll see Driver in "Beauty."
BTW - "Lowlife in High Heels" was the name of Warhol superstar
Holly Woodlawn's autobiography.
Helen Hunt, has several films out this year including "Pay
It Forward" and "What Women Want," will star for Woody Allen
in his next project. As stated here earlier, Charlize Theron
will also star.
Leonardo (is it necessary to also include Dicaprio?) is
in negotiations to star in "Catch Me if You Can," playing
a con man who was the only teenager ever placed on the FBI's
10 most wanted list. First, however, he'll be seen in Scorsese's
"Gangs of New York."
Kevin Spacey has signed to star in the drama "K-Pax," about
a mysterious patient at a mental hospital who claims to be
from the planet K-Pax. Several other actors had been attached
to the role before Spacey signed on.
Hot shot Edward Norton will reunite with "Primal Fear" director
Gregory Hoblit on "Hart's War," a World War II drama set in
a German prison camp. Brad Pitt will play Hogan?
John Cleese has joined Jason Alexander in the ensemble cast
of "Rat Race," a remake of the 1963 comedy "It's a Mad Mad
Mad World." In the words of my grandfather, "If it ain't broke,
don't fix it." The original is a masterpiece. No reason to
try.
Jimmy Smits will join horror legend Christopher Lee in the
cast of "Episode II" of the "Star Wars" series. Smits will
play the foster father of Princess Leia.
Delroy Lindo will join Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito in
the cast of David Mamet's "The Heist."
Roberto Benigni will be co-starring with his wife Nicolett
Braschi in a live action version of Pinocchio. No no no no
no no!!!
Hector Elizando joins Raquel Welch in "Tortilla Soup," an
English language, Latino-set remake of "Eat Drink Man Woman."
Dean Devlin, the producer of "The Patriot" makes his directing
debut with "Cellular," a thriller about a man who accidentally
receives a phone call from a woman who has been kidnapped.
The sequel wont be out until May 2001 and Universal has
already signed screenwriter Jonathan Hales to pen a third
installment of "The Mummy" franchise, "The Scorpion King."
Tom Tyker's follow up to "Run Lola Run: will be a love story
and thriller called "The Princess and the Warrior."
"AROUND
THE FIRE" starring Devon Sawa will be released on Video
and DVD, and the soundtrack will be released on CD on August
22nd.
Around The Fire also stars Tara Reid, Eric Mabius and Bill
Smitrovitch and features the music of Phish, Grateful Dead,
Bob Marley, String Cheese Incident, The Meters, Finley Quaye,
Red House Painters and more.
"AROUND THE FIRE" on VIDEO:
You will be able to rent Around The Fire at Blockbuster,
Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, Video Update and basically
everywhere else.
AROUND THE FIRE on DVD: The Around The Fire DVD features
awesome behind the scenes interviews and footage of the filmmakers
and actors. It is a crucial addition to any serious movie
buff's catalog and even more important for those who are less
serious (obviously).
AROUND THE FIRE CD: Liquid City Records is putting out this
enticing collection of musical nuggets featuring NEVER BEFORE
RELEASED tracks by GRATEFUL DEAD, VINYL, and LIVING DAYLIGHTS.
The soundtrack also offers choice tunes by String Cheese Incident,

Notes
From Austin : I wanted to show Web how gay Aaron is, but
he didn't get any dings on his "gaydar." Of course, Web is
straight, but I guess straight people can have gaydar too,
just not as finely tuned, perhaps. After we watched the show
for a while, however, I think Web was seeing things my way.
