Notes
from Austin, Volume 2 #27
Hollywood
News
The new Coen Brothers' flick, "O Brother, Where For Art Thou,"
now has a release date of 12/22/2000. But will this be a wide
release? Chances are the film will open only in LA, and perhaps
NY, on that dates for Oscar consideration and then bow in
early 2001 across the rest of the country.
What's up with Mike Meyers and Universal? The two have been
battling in court of the press over Meyer's "dieter" project,
based on his SNL skit "Sprokets." The film was scheduled to
begin shooting this month, but Meyer's recently dropped out
(reportedly because he hated the script) and Universal has
brought lawsuits against the actor for breach of contract
and hinted at several unusual allegations against his character.
Meyers filed a countersuit and the two now seem close to a
settlement. Meanwhile, the "dieter" project seems dead. Universal
termed all of the people who were working on pre-production
of the project this week.
Spielberg will begin shooting the long-anticipated Kubrick
property "A.I." on 8/17. WB is hoping to release the film
in early summer (6/29) of 2001. The cast will include Jude
Law, Haley Joel Osment, Sam Robards, Adam Scott, Jake Thomas
and others. Spielberg has written the script based on the
notes and treatments of the project put together by Kubrick
over the years. Kubrick often talked about the project but
always seemed to delay actually making the film saying that
the technical capabilities of film were not advanced enough
to create his vision perfectly. With the computer technology
available today, that argument seems to be unusable. Spielberg
seems just the right director to take on the film, in my book.
"A.I." stands for Artificial Intelligence. Osment will play
a young robot in the film which has some similarities, it
seems, to "Bicentennial Man."
OWEN WILSON is in final talks to join Gene Hackman in "Behind
Enemy Lines," about a veteran Marine and a young Navy pilot
trapped in enemy territory.
Remade/Remodeled:
Tim Burton directs. Rick Baker does the make-up. The film
is "Planet of the Apes." The remake is due July 4th, 2001,
from Fox. Mark Wahlberg will play the lead human. Michael
Clarke Duncan and Tim Roth will portray apes. Ain't It Cool
News reports that Helena Bonham-Carter is in talks to play
a female lead.
Meanwhile "Spider Man" has a Thanksgiving 2001 release date
already slated. The film will be directed by Sam Raimi and
will star Tobey Maguire in the title role.
And John McTiernan's "Rollerball" will star Chris Klien,
LL Cool J, Jean Reno and Rebecca Romajin Stamos.
From the festivals:
SXSW: "Loving
Jezebel," which won the audience award at SXSW 2000, is
now slated for an arthouse release on 10/27
Slamdance: "Double
Parked" with Callie Thorn, Rufus Read and Noah Fleiss
has been picked up for an arthouse release in September.
Sundance: "About Adam" has been moved to a Spring 2001 release
by Mirimax.
He still makes them... Question is, will anyone release them?
Whether it's called "Driven," "RPM" or "Champs," Sylvester
Stallone's racing film will not be released until April or
May 2001. Meanwhile, Stallone's film "D-Tox," which was originally
known as "The Outpost." may now be called "Eye See You." Uck!
It too may not see the light of day until spring 2001 in the
U.S. Stallone also has a film called "Get Carter" which is
supposed to be released in October.
Two guys you don't want to be in the same room with: Harland
Williams has joined the cast of "Freddy Got Fingered," the first
feature to be written and directed by MTV's Tom Green. That
will be one ZANY movie.
How much white trash can you get in one film? David Spade's
next flick, "Joe Dirt" finds him playing a radio DJ. Roseanne,
Gary Busey and Kid Rock are also in the cast.
Parents--- think up your excuses now! "Pokeman 3" will come
out Easter 2001. "Pokemon 4" is already in development.
When Chris Tucker and F. Gary Gray left "Black Knight" on the
table, Martin Lawrence was there to pick it up. The film, about
a black man who is transported back to medieval times, is now
slated to begin filming in November and to be directed by Gil
Junger, who helmed "10 Things I Hate About You."
Peter Berg and Chris Penn have singed on the Chris Kattan feature
"Corky Bonono." The film find's Kattan as the son of a mob boss.
He infiltrates the CIA (or is it the FBI?) to see what they
have on his dad.
The Hollywood Shuffle:
Jennifer Jason Leigh's "Skipped Parts" has been moved to
early 2001.
Marky Mark and Jaoquin Phoenix fans will have to wait yet
another month to see "The Yards." It's now slated for October.
"Quills," the Marque De Sade film with Geoffrey Rush has
moved from December to November.
Woody Allen's first film evolving from his 3 picture deal with
Dreamworks probably won't be released until Fall of 2001. The
only known cast member currently is Charlize Theron, who signed
up this past week. Theron had a small part in Allen's "Celebrity."
Theron will first join Vincent Perez in "The Husband I Bought,"
based on the Ayn Rand novella.
Even though the third "Crow" film, "The Crow: Salvation," is
still looking to be distributed, DMX has already signed on to
do the fourth installment, "The Crow: Lazarus."
Cameron Diaz is in talks to star in the offbeat romantic comedy
"The Untitled Nancy Pimental Project." Now, is this the name
of the film, or the name of an unnamed film?
Oh Diane! Diane Lane is in talks to star opposite Keanu Reeves
in "Hard Ball," a drama about an inner-city Little League team.
While Diane Baker will re-create her role of Senator Ruth Martin
from "The Silence of the Lambs" in the sequel "Hannibal."
MARY TYLER MOORE, whom I love - but who gets weirder everytime
I see her, will play a teacher trying to cope with a motley
group of juveniles in New Line's "Cheaters."
If Russell Crowe agrees to make his directing debut with "A
Course in Miracles," he should have his head examined. In the
film, Crowe would also play the lead role of a Jesuit priest
suffering from a crisis of faith who is sent by the Vatican
to investigate reported miracles. I hated this film the first
17 times I saw it, included it's latest incarnation, "Stigmata."
BEN AFFLECK is in talks to take over the role of CIA analyst
Jack Ryan in the big-screen version of Tom Clancy's "The Sum
of All Fears." Harrison is just too damn old, I guess.
Wes Bentley (of "American
Beauty") is in talks to join Heath Ledger (of "The
Patriot") in director Shekhar Kapur's remake of "Four Feathers."
Question is, who will play the other 2 feathers?
Sam Rockwell is in talks to join Danny DeVito in writer-director
David Mamet's "The Heist," playing a thief's nephew who is sent
on a heist.
The DV revolution continues: Indie fave Philip Seymour Hoffman
will star in "Last Party 2000," a digital feature chronicling
the election process with Hoffman visiting both the Democratic
and Republican National Conventions. Donovan Leitch will direct
the film. That's mellow-yellow's son, by the way.
Stuart Townsend is in talks to take the lead role as the vampire
Lestat in "Queen of the Damned," based on the book by Anne Rice.
Wasn't an unknown supposed to play him in the original before
Tom Cruise stepped in and pissed off Rice? Who will take over
Townsend's role when the budget gets to soaring. I think Wes
Bentley or Tobey Maguire might be good choices.
Michael Caine, who wrapped up filming "Miss Congeniality" here
in Austin recently, will next work on "Last Orders," the story
of a group who meet to carry out the dying wish of one of their
best friends. Bob Hoskins will costar.
Heterosexuals characters reproduce and make more little stars!
Characters who will have young sons in their sequels include
Brendan Fraiser's adventurer in "The Mummy 2" and the titular
character in "Crocodile Dundee in L.A."
Alexander Payne, writer and director of "Election," has signed
to polish the final script of "Jurassic Park III," which begins
filming next month. Spielberg will only act as a producer.
Ron Howard will next helm a thriller for Warners about a man
trying to free his brother from Chechen bandits.
Things
to do this Week (8/4-8/11) : Lodger's
Picks: "God of Cookery" at the Alamo, Psychedelic Furs at
Stubbs.
Notes
From Austin : On Saturday night, my friend Mary and I
went to the Agliff "Sound of Music" sing-a-long. We had to
read the lyrics from a program. Sigh. (I'm not quite SO GAY
that I know they lyrics by heart).
