Notes
from Austin, Volume 2 #27
LODGER's Notes
I have had hell week with my car, so I didn't get to go out
much. Damn thing is in the shop and I am relying on friends
and coworkers for rides. You don't truly know who your friends
are until your car breaks down.
Over the weekend, my friends Sean and Angie came to town
for a wedding. They only stayed one night and we didn't even
really get to party. I hope they make a trip back soon!
On Saturday night, my friend Mary and I went to the Agliff
"Sound of Music" sing-a-long. The 1400 seat Paramount theater
sold out for the event, but we were able to pick up some will-call
tickets right at 8pm and sat about three rows from the top.
It was a bit hard to see and hear the screen but we still
had a great time. The audience was a hoot and the singing
and catty comments were really fun. This is a great idea for
an event. I think the same device could work really swell
with "The Wizard of Oz." My only complaint is this: Why didn't
they get (or make) an open captioned "print" for the film.
These are prints played on occasion at theaters for the hearing
impaired. On TV, it's called "closed Captioning" because you
have the option to "open" it and see the words. On film, obviously,
there is no choice. But for this event, having the words on
the print itself would make the singing along so much easier.
We had to read the lyrics from a program. Sigh. (I'm not quite
SO GAY that I know the lyrics by heart).
If an open captioned print were made for the event, which
will sell out across the world if it is attempted, then the
print could be used for screenings for the hearing impaired
as well as for the sing-a-longs.
On Sunday, I went to the sneak screening of as new Austin
film called "Radio
Free Steve." I talked to Karrie a bit before she and Tim
and their coolest employee Daniel got slammed with a huge
audience.
I thought I saw the Zellner brothers after the film, but
I'm not sure. I know I saw Graham Reynolds of the Golden Arm
Trio and Wiley Wiggins after the show but I wasn't feeling
well, so I didn't say "howdy."
Two movies that use Gloria Gaynor's disco classic "I Will
Survive" open in August. "The
Replacements," starring Keanu Reeves, which also uses
the song in it's trailer, and "Coyote Ugly" which has the
girls sing the song at a karaoke bar in the first scene.
I saw myself, in heavy ugly, make-up, on Wednesday night
on LubeTV. I looked like shit. I'll be there next week as
well for the playing of the 22 minute Bowie "clip" "Jazzing
for Blue Jean," directed by Julien Temple (8/9, 11pm, Cable
channel 10).
I thought this episode was pretty amusing. John and Mark
(whom I must start calling Jeffrey Stylus) hosted Toby Hiedel,
a local filmmaker who has made several shorts. They star in
his "Kung Fu Dumpster Boy," which aired on this episode.
They also played the video/film I made with Tim
the Wonder Horse called "Monster Piss." I've seen the
damn thing 20 times or more and Tim's performance still makes
me crack up. It's a pretty funny film. I thought it was cool
to see it on TV.
