And, by god, you can too! Simply send me the info via e-mail for May by Wednesday 4/26 and we will get it up! Even if the gig is out of Austin, we'll publish it. So send me the 411.

BTW - the same goes for any event, film, play, art opening, poetry reading, happening or whatever. Just get me the info and I will get it on the site. If you want to be on May calendar though, Deadline is 4/26. O-Tay!

Cool!

Wiley Wiggins guest starred on my friends' cable access show this week. John Christensen and Mark Brauner have a little show called "Lube TV" on Channel 10 at 11pm Wednesday nights. John and Wiley are in Rick Linklater's new film "Waking Life." (Funny how I think of him as Rick now - it's an Austin thing. I'll be calling Sandra Bullock "Sandy" soon). Anyway, it was about the best Lube TV ever, even with Wiley's awful, silly, pointless little video freakshow thrown in. "Binary Cancer Tacos" was fun but boring. Wiley has dyed his hair and he looks great. His just so damn cool and smart and unique. And yes, damn it, cute. Too bad I can never talk to him without coming across as a completely moronic stalker. I don't exactly drool. Drooling would be a step up. It's one of those things where you meet someone famous and you think you are doing well and then, afterwards, you realize you came across as a complete weirdo. Oh well. I'll just have to stay warm and comfy here in my complete hopelessness.

Wiley, in addition to "Waking Life," has a film of his own that he is working on called "Gated Communities" as well as an appearance slated in the new film by the Zellner Brothers. He was in the Zellners' "Plastic Utopia" a couple of years back. Right now he's in Europe traveling around the countryside. Some German gay guy is probably making a complete fool of himself talking to him as we speak.

Kelly called me right at the end of Lube TV and asked me to come over and help him with his new CD burner. Rich was editing or working at school or something but he stopped by for a few minutes. I think Kelly wanted to see me but didn't want to invite me over just to hang out, which would have been fine. Kelly read to me from a play he is writing for some class that had all these philosophers in it that I had never heard of. No Hagel. No Nitsche. But it also has John Cassavettes and this guy George, an artist from San Marcos that Kelly and Rich know. Rich did a documentary about him, with some girl from school - Leslie something, called "City of Chickens." George used to paint all kinds of interesting and odd pictures which usual had female nudes in them. Now he paints only chickens.
I just finished reading an interview with Patti Smith that was printed in the Austin Chronicle a couple of weeks ago. I'm just in love with this lady. She is an American treasure. We need to exalt her. Not in a pretentious God-like way, but with songs and prayers of spirit and light. She's an amazing woman and I am crazy about her gifts, which she shares so freely with the world.

One of the jaw-dropping surprises from the interview: She's 53. That just amazes me. "Horses" came out in 1975, I guess that's 25 years ago. She would have been 28. Look at her on the cover. She looks 16 years old. amazing.

May life and fate smile upon you Patti, you sweet angel of light....

Went to see "High Fidelity." They had a new trailer up for "Road Trip," the new movie with Breckin Meyer and Tom Greene that comes out later this summer. This must have been what they call a Red Band trailer (only to be shown with rated R movies) because it was really racy. There's this goofy, weird looking young guy in the film, the kind that I think is cute but everyone else thinks is far too dorky to even be human, and you see him in his underwear. It's funny. But of course, it was kinda sexy to me. I really am a freak. Anyway, now I REALLY want to see this movie.

I also saw the trailer for "Time Code" on "Black and White." "Time Code" is the new Mike Figgis movie that is filmed in real time and has a quad-split screen effect throughout, from what I understand. It looks really cool. I had heard the film was only going to open in NY/LA, but hopefully we'll get to see it in Austin somehow.

The next meeting of the Cinemaker Co-op is at the Artplex on Guadalupe, as usual, on Sunday, April 30 at 7 pm. Bring 8mm films or video to show if ya want.
The Two Gentleman of Verona

In William Shakespeare's "The Two Gentleman of Verona," best friends Valentine and Proteus vie for the love of the beautiful Princess Sylvia. Will Proteus backstab his friend and forget his fair Julia for Sylvia? Come find out! The Austin Free Shakespeare Society (AFSS) presents a popcorn-tossing, booing and hissing, cheer-for-the-goodguy,tie-the-girl-to-the-railroad-tracks Vaudevillian Romp through this classic tale of love, betrayal, and redemption.

I saw Jay Edwards' short, "Mountain of Terror, Day of Dread" at the ZXZW film festival. He was nice enough to send me a copy of it on video along with an earlier short called "Project: Tiki Puka Puka." The latter somehow manages to spoof old 50's and 60's Roger Corman sci-fi classics and Marlon Brando's turn in the recent "Island of Dr. Moreau" at the same time. Both of them are hilarious. "Mountain" is a wonderful and loving homage to "The Creeping Terror," a film I have only heard about, but never been fortunate enough to see. (E-bay alert). "Creeping Terror" is highlighted in one of the Medved brother's books of the worst films of all time. In it, the monster is a rolled up piece of carpeting that eats people. A classic.
I did my laundry tonight and as I was waiting for the dryer to finish, I listened to the Sex Pistol's "Bullocks" CD on my walkman. There's something about hearing Johnny Rotten spit out "I am an anarchist" while folding your freshly laundered underwear that just seems wrong.
Bruce LaBruce tells me that his film "Skin Flick," which has already been released in video as a porno, will be seeing the light of day in the "Art" version as well. The porno ("Skin Gang") is available from All Worlds Video. The "film" version will be showing at the Cinema Village in New York in later April or early May. The video of this will be distributed by The French Connection (?) as well. LaBruce will also have a book of his photographs available soon as well.
The next Agency gig will be Thursday, April 27th at The Backroom on E. Riverside. 10:00 PM. Bring Cheez Whiz and a well-adjusted lemming, and you could win a FABULOUS PRIZE!!! (Or so claims lead swinger Jason Lee)
Jason Pankoke puts out a good mag about the Champaign/Urbana Illinois indie film scene called "Micro Film." He's gonna send me a copy of the new issue, #2, so I can tell you all what good schtuff is in there.
April 25th, it's 3 shorts by Julie Dash at the Texas Union Theater This is part of the AFS free cinema series. For more info,

APRIL 30 9:30 and Midnight FUGAZI: INSTRUMENT (1999, d. Jem Cohen and Fugazi, 115 min, NR, $5, all ages, passes welcome) A collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and the Washington DC band, the project covers the ten-year period from the band's inception in 1987. Far from a traditional documentary, the project is a musical document: a portrait of musicians at work. Mixing sync-sound 16mm, Super-8, video, and a wide range of archival formats, the piece includes concert footage, studio sessions, practice, touring, interviews and portraits of audience members from around the country. "Piecing it together over the course of about 5 years, I thought of bringing "dub" to documentary -- of a project where unadulterated real-time performances, abstract, rough-hewn Super 8 collages and archival artifacts would collide and conjoin in a way that honestly represented musical experience. The project was edited with band members and extensively uses soundtrack elements provided by Fugazi specifically for the film." -filmmaker Jem Cohen

BARBARELLA MAY 4-6, MIDNIGHT BONUS: Win prizes each night from HOG WILD!

HONG KONG SUNDAYS! Hong Kong Action: The first Sunday of every month Sunday, May 7: HONG KONG SUNDAYS! The first Sunday of every month from now until eternity, come on out to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for a rip-roaring, knuckle-busting kung fu attack. We will be bringing the best of the best, from brand new films to the old guard classics. Sundays will also feature a special Asian-themed menu to compliment the on-screen Hong Kong Action.

HONG KONG SUNDAYS: HEROIC TRIO MAY 7, 8:00 & 10:00 (1992, d. Siu-Tung Ching & Johnny To, NR, 104 min, $6 reg admission, $4.50 student, 18 and up, passes not valid) Has Hollywood ever gotten a comic book adaptation right? I think the answer is no. The Heroic Trio, however, shows Hollywood just what a great comic book movie is - the story and characters seem to come straight from a four-color strip, and nothing is lost in the translation. The action is wicked and fantastical, the plot line is appropriately two dimensional, and the generous heaps of humor balance the melodramatically tragic aspects of the story. The film is painted with broad brushstrokes - no room for subtlety in a super hero yarn. The Heroic Trio is the tale of three super-powered babes who must overcome an evil, magical force that is taking over their Gotham-esque city. Wonderwoman (Anita Mui, "the Madonna of Asia"), Invisible Girl (Michelle Yeoh, "Asia's Top Action Actress") and Thief Catcher (Maggie Cheung, "Former Miss Hong Kong") form an uneasy alliance in order to solve the mystery of a city-wide epidemic of disappearing babies Spectacular wire-fu fight sequences; blazing gunfire; a cannibalistic, unstoppable, morphing villain who resides in a bizarre subterranean hell and skin-tight leather body suits on voluptuous ass-kicking heroines add up to one hell of a movie.

THE TEXAS DOC TOUR ELLEN SPIRO RETROSPECTIVE MAY 10, 7:00 & 9:45 Spiro's dynamic docs (Roam Sweet Home, Diana's Hair Ego, Greetings from Out Here and others) are famous for their humor, spontaneity and technical finesse. Spiro will show a series of excerpts from early works plus new ones, The Shampoo King and a sexy surprise. Alamo passes not valid

THE TEXAS DOCUMENTARY TOUR A WELL FOUNDED FEAR MAY 31, 7:00 (D. Michael Camerini and Shari Robertson, $6, $4 students and AFS, passes not valid) Imagine that your life has fallen apart -- maybe you've been tortured or raped, or maybe you've gotten out just in time. You'll have one chance to start a new life in the U.S., and an hour to tell your story to a neutral bureaucrat. Now imagine yourself on the other side of the desk, listening to people seeking refuge from any one of a hundred countries. The law says you can offer asylum if you find that someone has a "well-founded fear of persecution." Three times a day, your job is to decide their fates. Political asylum--who deserves it? Who gets it? With unprecedented access, filmmakers Michael Camerini and Shari Robertson enter the closed corridors of the INS to reveal the dramatic real-life stage where human rights and American ideals collide with the nearly impossible task of trying to know the truth.

THE GOLEM: MUSIC BY MARK RUBIN JUNE 28 & 29, 7:00 & 9:30 (1920, d. Paul Wegener, 118 min, tickets $12 in advance, $14 day of show. Advance tickets on sale May 28 at the Alamo, passes not valid) This rarely seen silent film is based on the ancient Jewish legend of the clay figure created by Rabbi Loew in the 16th century to defend the Jews in the Prague ghetto against pogrom. In this great classic famous for its extraordinary crowd scenes and painted sets, the Golem falls in love with the Rabbi's daughter, terrorizes the emperor's court and is subdued by an innocent child. "The alternately terrified and exultant crowd at times recalls the flamboyant outlines and disjointed movement of a painting by El Greco" - Lotte Eisner, Facets. Live musical accompaniment by Mark Rubin and Friends.

HIGHLANDER JUNE 29-July 1, MIDNIGHT

HONG KONG SUNDAYS - HOLY WEAPON JULY 2, 8:00 & 10:00 (1993, d. Jing Wong, 18 and up, $6, passes not valid) Hong Kong Sundays continue with a film that is so alien to the Western Film Tradition that it makes China look like another planet. The story of this kung-fu oddity focuses on a battle between the Japanese and Chinese Gods. Gods use kung fu, just like mortals, but their kung fu is so strong and furious that when they whip it out, they leave a bloody wake of body parts one mile wide. Mortals can raise themselves to god-like status for the defense of the country by consuming massive quantities of "the greatest drugs," but not without serious side-effects (the main ones are death and/or insanity) In Holy Weapon, you will see swordfights with 30 foot crucifixes, green-skinned blood-sucking vampires, women who turn into giant black widow spiders to devour their mates, and some truly inexplicable cross-dressing. Holy Weapon defies imagination, defies American movie sensibilities, defies all reason and logic and, most importantly, seriously defies gravity.

CITY OF LOST CHILDREN JULY 6-8, MIDNIGHT - JULY 8 & 9, 4:00

THE BREAKFAST CLUB JULY 13-15, MIDNITE - JULY 15 & 16, 4:00 Know your 80's trivia and win prizes from HOGWILD!

Our next production - WAR - written and directed by our beloved playwright-in-residence Kirk Lynn is just around the corner, running June 8 - July 1 at The Off Center. The play is in many ways Kirk's most adventurous work to-date. This is due in no small part to the large multi-media components of the production which include a live DJ mixing the "soundscape" before your very eyes (and ears) and the use of many large projection screens. The trick is -- we need slide projectors. And lots of 'em.

So, we're coming to you, our friends and supporters, to see you if you might have a slide projector just gathering dust in your garage or hall closet that you might be willing to lend to the cause. We can probably use as many as we can find. If you just happen to have one that we can borrow for the production, we promise to return them in good or better condition once the show is over on July 1. We need projectors with remote controllers and if you have the manuals and/or any extra lenses that would sweet icing on the cake. If you are able to help out, just pop an email to Robert Pierson at mailto:robert@rudemechs.com robert@rudemechs.com or reply to this email.
