SXSW 2002 - Day 6 - Wednesday March 13, 2002

I worked all day and it was great. There is this cute young guy where I work, let’s call him Reg, who is, of course, straight, and we flirt a lot. On Wednesday, he wanted something from me (a favor of sorts) and I suggested that he would have to do a favor for me (wink wink, nudge nudge) if he wanted one in return. This flirtation escalated to the point where both of us actually thought something might happen. My stomach was full of butterflies and he even said, “I’m scared.” It was intoxicating.

Of course, nothing happened. By the end of the day, I told him I’d do the favor for him and if he was interested in “the other” he should let me know whenever. He said, “I’ll have to ask my girlfriend.” It was funny. But it was also a great day. I love flirting more than anything.

Is there a film festival going on right now?

Allan Campbell called me about seeing films tonight. I wanted to see “Salesman” at 8 at the Arbor and “Two Towns of Jasper” at 10 at the Paramount. Somehow I let Allan talk me into staying at the Arbor and seeing “Martin and Orloff” there instead. I hate changing my plans. I’m very set in my ways about stuff.

I went home after work and took a short nap and headed to the Arbor. I was hungry as hell so I got some Super Nachos and a large Coke. I went into the theater, which was already seating and found Allan. He was in the spot I like, the third row. I found it amazing that Allan, who can be anal and picky about stuff, flexed to sit in the place I usually like to sit.

Harry Knowles and his entourage, including Daddy Geek (or is it papa Geek?), were in the row behind us. All through the movie, some female friend of Harry’s talked out loud. It was ridiculous. I can’t believe he didn’t bitch slap her.

The 4th SXSW trailer I have seen preceded the film. In this one, the guy and the puppet play a game to see who goes on “fry duty.” They pick actors and then name movies they were in. First one to blank loses. It was okay.

Lawrence Blume

We stayed for “Martin and Orloff” and I got another large Coke and some Crispy M&M’s. My friend Rav was in the row behind me and when we made eye contact I said hello. We talked a bit about movies we’d seen. Rav liked “The Slaughter Rule” and “Looking for Leonard.” Even though the last title refers to Leonard Cohen, apparently that’s only a small part of the film. Rav hated “Chelsea Walls.” He also talked about going to Telluride this year. Rav’s a cool young man who loves films. We also talked about how the “when” of seeing a movie can color how you feel about it. It’s always much easier to like films early in a festival when you don’t have other films in your short-term memory to color your objectivity.

The director of “Martin and Orloff,” Lawrence Blume, was actually in attendance and did a Q&A after the film. He lives right down the street from the Upright citizen’s Brigade Theater in NYC and that’s how he got to know the guys in the troupe.

I saw a fifth SXSW trailer. In this one, the guy and the puppet try and come up with “tag lines” for the items in the Burger Hut” using film type pitches. It was mildly amusing.

I went home and discovered I had a message from J.K. He said he would call me back before he went to bed. He did. It was like things were back to normal. That was awesome.
