SXSW2001 Day Eight - Friday, March 16

A pretty dull day, event wise, although I did get to see 1 and 1/2 good movies. And then there was the last thing that happened to me!

And, oh yeah. If I overhear one more person talking about how great "Memento" is, I'm going to scream. Yes, it's a great film, but there are many, many others in the festival. Hopefully tomorrow everyone will be talking about "Blow."

I didn't get up until about 2. I was only slightly hungover but still moving pretty slow. At 3ish I went to the Bad Dog, it's about 5 blocks from my apartment, to see "Low Self- esteem Girl." The director was there for a Q&A but, well, lets just say he wouldn't want to hear my questions. And I really wasn't all that interested in anything he might have to say. I went home and ate and wrote.

At 7ish I headed back to Bad Dog for "The Zeros." Again the director was in attendance and doing a Q&A but I didn't stay as I wanted to head to the Paramount and get in line for "Blow."

I got to the Paramount early and they were already allowing people with badges to go in. On my way to my seat, I ran into the guy I met from Guerilla-films.com. We chatted a bit and I watched the Paramount fill up. I like sitting towards the front, so I really didn't have to hurry.

Louis Black, Senior Director of SXSW introduced Harry Knowles and Harry introduced the film. Harry, pimping himself as always, talked about getting e-mails from Ted Demme and how he got to see a first cut of the film with his buddies and how he told Ted that he had to bring the film to SXSW. But the bottom line, after much pandering to the audience from Louis and Harry, was that Ted was on an international press junket for the film and didn't come. Meanwhile, Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, who are the stars, are working on pre- strike film and have no free time. Harry said that he and Ted are going to be on "Politically Incorrect" on Oscar Night. He claimed he would give Ted a hard time for not coming.

By the way, I don't really normally look too closely at Harry but he looked to me to have gotten even larger. Maybe, and I have no room to talk, I never noticed just how big he is before. Then again, maybe it's too much caviar and champagne from Tim Burton and Sam Raimi.

Speaking of Harry and Raimi, you know, the difference between Harry and myself is that he masturbates to the thought of Tobey Maguire in THE SPIDER MAN SUIT and I masturbate to the thought of TOBEY MAGUIRE in the Spider-Man suit.

After the screening, I ran into Oriah of Hobble in the Paramount lobby. He was with some girl and they were going to see Zeke at the Atomic.

We chatted a bit and then said our goodbyes and Oriah gave me a nice hug. We've never really hugged before. It was nice. As I was walking to my car, my glow outshined the spotlights on the capitol building dome!

Last day tomorrow! How many films can I cram into the day?
