SXSW2001 Day Two - Saturday, March 10
Oriah Lonsdale, front man of my fave local band Hobble,
had sent me an e-mail saying he was going to be seeing
"Memento"
and "Bartleby"
on Saturday and hoped we could hook up. I had planned
on seeing those films as well so figured that I just
might see him. I didn't think that the minute I got
to the screening room at the Convention Center I would
run into him. Oriah, always friendly and nice, called
to me the minute he saw me. I was glad to see him.

Mike Flaten, the guitarist for Hobble, was also
there so the three of us hung out while waiting
for "Memento" to start. Mike directed the Hobble
video for "Double Wide," which, of course, stars
Oriah. The video was accepted into the SXSW music
video program so they got film passes. Michael
Bertin of The Austin Chronicle calls the video
for "Double Wide," one of the "two real keepers"
of the music video showcase. I'm looking forward
to seeing it. Some friends of mine have seen it
on the Austin Music Channel. It features Oriah
as "Rollerboy."
Also sitting next to us was Daniel of the Alamo
Drafthouse who somehow got some time off during
this busy week to see some films. Daniel told
me that Tim and Karrie League, who own the Alamo,
are looking into acquiring the recently closed
Regal Village 4 on the north side of town. The
plan seems to be to open a first run 4 screen
that operates much like the Alamo with food and
drink. This would be an awesome undertaking and
a really interesting addition to Austin theater
venues. I hope that happens. With the recent opening
of the Bad Dog Comedy Theater, which features
a room where films can be screened and food and
drink are served, there could be a glut of such
facilities in town. But I think there is plenty
of run for such venues here.
After "Memento," I hung out with Oriah and Mike
some more.I also saw Harry Knowles and his dad
as well as my new friend from the other night
who writes for Guerrilla-film.com (or something
like that) and Jan, a local film-goer who is at
almost every sneak preview and who is friends
with Harry.
|
Jan is always sweet and friendly and always has a
big smile when she greets you. She seems to like most
films, usually more than I, and we have great and interesting
conversations at times. Jan even called to me when we
got into the crowded "Bartleby" screening and offered
me a seat next to her. That was really nice of her.
Oriah and Mike and I talked a lot waiting for the
second film and I learned that Mike works for Videoasis
and that they sell videos, mainly pornography I think,
and rocks. Yes, rocks. Apparently porn and geology are
the owner's passion. Mike also knows far too much about
his own "roots." He talked endlessly about his family's
history. I think it was my fault for bringing this up
by referencing "Vikings" in some sort of gay joke I
was making. Live and learn.

Matt Dentler of SXSW introduced the director
of "Bartleby," Jonthan Parker, and he did a Q&A
after the film. Q&A's are so weird; you always
get dumbasses who ask the most inane question.
When a filmmaker ends a film at a point where
any number of things could happen next, he is
asking you to decide what YOU think happened next.
Do not ask him in a Q&A, "What happened next?"
That just shows your stupidity. Someone asked
Parker, "Why do you think Bartleby gave up?" which
is the whole point of the film. You are supposed
to contemplate this question. If Parker had an
answer in mind, he would have shown it to us in
his film. Jeez.
Oriah and Mike went off to the Alamo after the
"Bartleby" screening and I went to the Bad Dog
for "Godass."
Austinite Bob
Ray, who directed "Rock
Opera" and who helped with the choice of music
videos for SXSW, knows the producer of this film
and had mentioned it to me previously. I wanted
to see it because Fred Schnieder of the B-52's
is in it playing a gay man. This is, of course,
not the acting part of the gig for Schnieder as
he is an openly gay man. His acting was, of course,
trying to deliver dialogue. I saw Bob at the screening
and he said hello.

The most curious thing happened to me when I entered
the Bad Dog. I showed my badge to get into the venue
and an older lady who was checking badges said, after
reading "Lodger, filethirteen.com" on mine, "Interesting
website." I thanked her. Then she said, "Even my high
school kids know about it." This really threw me. "Really?"
I queried. She replied in the affirmative and I said
"Cool." This made my head spin. It's strange when people
recognize me from the website. Nothing makes me happier.
I wondered if she meant her biological children, but
presumed she was a teacher, or a employed somehow at
a high school hence the phrasing "my high school kids...".

Elena
Carr and Maggie Carey, the filmmakers responsible
for "Ladyporn"
|
The director of "Godass," Esther Bell, did a
introduction and a Q&A about her film. She also
mentioned that her movie had been picked up by
Showtime, although she said she won't see any
money from it until 2012, and that Indie DVD was
also distributing it. Good for her.
Waiting at the Bad Dog for "Ladyporn,"
I ran into my friend Allan Campbell who often
appears on Lube
TV with us. I also saw Ryan Williams of the
Austin Film Festival (and director of "Daydream"
which will be on Lube TV this Wednesday). Angela
Lee of SXSW was there to introduce the film. There
were a lot of Austin people there because a lot
of Austin people are in the film. It was made
by two young ladies who go to UT.
After the screening, I ran into Allan again,
as he was pimping my site and Lube TV to "Ladyporn"
co-director Maggie Carey. Sara and Jason, two
folks I met through John Christensen were also
there. I got to say hello to Jason but Sara, who
was in John's "Handsome Wieners" commercial parody,
was running around and I didn't get to see her.
I was dog tired, so I excused myself and headed
home.
Day three will be a shorty for me as I am sleeping
in!
