Austin
Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2004 - Day 6 -
Tuesday 8/31
Tuesday is shorts day at Agliff (is it this way every
year? Seems like they always have an Italian film at 9
o'clock on the first Friday night, so maybe they have
a formula). Anyway, I was going to try to see both series
of shorts tonight, "Boy-O-Rama" at 7:30 and "Divine Comedies"
at 9:40 and I pretty much succeeded in that effort. There
will be a complete rundown of all the shorts I saw at
Agliff 2004 posted sometimes near the end of the festival.
I called Johnny and realized that he had seen the
first program when it ran for the first time this past
weekend, but he told me he was coming to the 9:40 show.
I went in and got my seat.
Ryan Cox, the Agliff Film Programmer responsible
for choosing many of the shorts that showed at Agliff
this year introduced the program as well as it's sponsor,
Five Star
Auto Group. The guy who owns the place got up and
gave a nice short speech about his business which he
said was "Gay owned" and then told us that "all of our
staff is gay, so we're very gay friendly." He seemed
really nice and professional and it seemed like the
kind of place I would want to check out if I were in
the market for a car.
Ryan then introduced three filmmakers who were
in attendance. I had been looking forward to seeing
Austin filmmaker David Zellner's short "Quasar Hernandez"
since I found out it was in the festival, so I recognized
him on stage right away. Ryan introduced the others
as J.T. Seaton ("Nightshadows") and Jason Cooper ("Daniel").
When I had talked to Ryan a few days before, he mentioned
that there were a couple "local" filmmakers in this
program, but I am not sure who, other than Zellner,
was from here. The three made some brief introductions
and then the films began.
I hung around afterwards hoping for a Q&A but as
usual everyone was filing out and when it looked pretty
much like it wasn't going to happen, I walked out to.
I went to the lobby and waited for John but like a dumbass
totally forgot to look for Zellner. He's e-mailed me
and I've seen and reviewed a lot of his work but we
have never met in person. I was hoping to introduce
myself to him. I didn't see Ryan either but then again,
I wasn't even looking for him. I guess my mind is kinda
in a haze after so many days and so many film.
I was standing by the concession counter and I
noticed some postcards, so I started looking, thinking
they might be Agliff related. But they were Arbor things.
I got a flyer which said that THX 1138 was going to
be released as a Director's Cut and play at the Arbor
on September 10th. Then it says the DVD is due 9/14.
That's kinda crazy. There was also some interesting
stickers and tattoos for the film. And I got a series
of 4 postcards for the new Mark Ruffalo art film. I'll
be damned if I can remember what it's called. Where
did I put those things?
There were lots of Agliff volunteers busily helping
folks as usual. They have been really hyping the "Best
Little Whorehouse" sing-along before the movies lately.
I saw Bobette, Bruce and Kevin (the hottie fishing cap
boy) all working at the Agliff box office table.
Summer, the Agliff membership director and Bobette's
gal-pal came up and said hello and we talked for a bit.
It wasn't long before some big-shot member type came
up and dragged her away though. We talked about "Surge
of Power" which she hadn't seen. She told me she had
heard that it was over-camp. I told her that in my opinion
it wasn't gay enough. "I want my superheroes flaming!"
I exclaimed. Summer is such a sweet girl.
John came and we sat in the third row next to the
reserved seats members who have hunkered down there
at almost every showing I've been to. We chatted a bit
and Bobette came up and introduced the next series of
shorts. She also introduced the sponsor, Project Transitions
but I missed most of what was being said because Johnny
kept whispering to me about their yearly holiday ball.
After the short shorts program, we went to Pluckers
and ate. I was wearing my groovy gay necklace and for
some reason when I walked in, I felt like I was in a
room of straight people and everyone was sneering at
me. I haven't felt so uncomfortable in a long time.
There was a really bad vibe in the place. I tried to
ignore it and we ordered and talked for quite a while.
We chatted about the shorts we had seen and about a
ton of other things. We spent a lot of time talking.
UT is back in session and Pluckers is on west campus,
so there were lots of cute boys coming in and out. We
spent a lot of time looking too. Not a bad Tuesday night
