Austin
Film Festival 2005 - Day 5 - Monday, October 24th
I had to work an afternoon shift at my day job on Monday.
But on Sunday night I just couldn't get to sleep, so I
finally sat down to the computer and wrote up day one
and my reviews of "Shopgirl"
and "Kiss
Kiss Bang Bang." I went into work and told my boss
and a co-worker about the big blow-up
with Johnny Oh! and they insisted that I play the
phone message for them right then. Johnny apologized for
telling me to "Shut up," but he didn't even hint at what
had him so upset. He said something that really pissed
me off to: "I didn't know I had to be in a good mood for
us to watch a movie together." No John, it's a lot of
fun sitting around for two hours watching a movie I don't
even want to see with a person I don't want to be around.
What a thrill!
I had kind of planned on seeing "The Sisters" and
maybe the film about Roy London back when I thought
I was going to get up early on Day
Two and see a press sneak of "Three...
Extremes" at the Dobie. I decided since I missed
it to go see it at the IMAX tonight but since it didn't
start until 9pm, I came home after work and did some
more writing. I noticed more e-mails from AFF and thought
that whoever was doing the e-stuff for the festival
this year was doing an awesome job. If it is this B-Side
Entertainment or whatever, they rock.
After watching a bit of "Two and a Half Men" and
the opening bump for "Out of Practice," I drove over
to the IMAX. Since there were no films at the Paramount
tonight, I wanted to be early. I was even earlier than
expected; the drive takes only eight minutes. Since
Johnny had told me that the garage was free after 5
at the Bob Bullock State History Museum where the IMAX
is housed when we saw "Brick,"
I didn't bother with street parking and went right in
the underground area.
There was a small line and they were already lining
up badge people with Film Pass people. I saw my friend
Jan and she had just come out of "Abnormal Beauty,"
the film that had replaced "R-Point" at AFF this year.
She said she liked it better than "The
Eye," which, to me, isn't saying much. We joked
about how lining up the badge and pass people together
would totally disrupt the social order of the film festival
and cause chaos and anarchy. Jan always takes time off
from her day job during festivals and we talked about
all the regular release movies we were missing like
"Good Night and Good News" and some Spanish movie that
they opened at the Metro this week, "Secuestro Express,"
which Jan wanted to see and "Thumbsucker" and "Kids
in America" that I wanted to see. A friend of mine told
me that "Kids" was going to be pulled this week after
being out for only 7 days in Austin. We were talking
about the tight schedule on Thursday night after the
first schedule movie of that night and Jan said she
was going to try and see "Sorry, Haters" as her last
movie of AFF. I knew I'd be wiped out and would probably
just see the last show at the Paramount, "The Squid
and the Whale" at 7:30pm.
We got in the IMAX and waited several minutes for
the film to begin. There were lots of cute guys coming
in to see "Three... Extremes," some of them Asian. It
suddenly hit me that if you are in a college town and
want to meet cute young guys, the Asian action flicks
are the place to be. Eventually Barbara Morgan, the
AFF Executive Director, got up and did a pretty standard
intro and the film begun.
During the film, the college boys next to me whispered
too loudly to one and other occassionally but this was
mainly during the Fruit Chan segment of "Three... Extremes"
which was quite boring. They were quiet during the Takashi
Mike episode which was good except that the sound during
that portion of the film, which is often complete silence,
kept clicking in and out of digital sound causing the
emergence then disappearance of "hiss." It was annoying.
After the film, as I was walking out of the theater
into the lobby, Johnny was there and walked up and started
talking to me. On the spot I decided I would just try
to have the simplest conversation I could with him as
we walked to our cars. He was talking about the movie
and then said something about seeing "Prime" tomorrow
night at the Paramount and how this would be his last
chance to give the cute concessionist boy his phone
number. WTF! If that wasn't what he was upset about
yesterday, being rebuffed by this guy, then what was
it that made him so upset yesterday?
I came home and watched "Medium" which I had taped.
Wish I had a psychic to tell me what the fuck was up
with Johnny yesterday.
