Austin Film Festival 2001 Film Reviews!

Big Bad Love - A tourdeforce from husband and wife actors Arliss Howard and Debra Winger.

Century Hotel -You get the feeling that you've seen this all before.

Gypsy '83 - I have never been so mad at a film for dropping the ball in my life.

Lisa Picard is Famous - One of the most putrid, hideous, vile and homophobic pieces of pure Grade-A shit to be splattered across the cinema screen since "Cruising" or "Boys in the Band."

Twelve - For everyone who almost puked at the jittery and shaky camera work of "Blair Witch"

The Last Hope - Embarrassing, stagnant and devoid of anything remotely resembling humanity.

Mancha Blanca - This pseudo documentary will bore the shit out of you.

Miserable Comforters - I don't know what to say about this film. What can be said?

Riders - Watching this film you get the impression that scripter and director Doug Sadler watched far to many TV-Movies-of-the-Week as a child.

Waking Life - Linklater has far more complex issues in mind here. You have to pay attention. He will accept nothing less than your complete attention.

The Devil's Backbone - del Toro uses the unreality of a ghost story to reflect and refract the story of war and, especially, children in war.

Donnie Darko - the film becomes the blackest, most complex and troubling teenage film since "The Virgin Suicides."

Cahoots - it's got one of the most ballsy scripts I've ever seen/heard and features a pretty damn bold, albeit not always on-target, performance by Keith Carradine.

Lethal Force - Purposefully hilarious, "Lethal Force" is a creative, well-executed spoof of cult action films.

America So Beautiful - Filmed well before these current events, the film nonetheless address racism and cultural identity which has become remarkably relevant today.

Living in Missouri - Is a ultra-low-budget character study about a man who has not matured.

The Duo -These are some of the most important and most talented people making indie films in Austin today.

Lakeboat - It is one of the most exciting and interesting Mamet pieces to be filmed.

After the Flood - Gritty, poetic, erotic and deeply troubling.

Ding-a-ling-less - The "Ding-a-ling" in the title refers to a penis and the story here concerns Jack, a man without one.

Cow Monkey - A film about rednecks and Granola crunchin' modern day hippies in search of the elusive Sasquatch.

Way Off Broadway - Might have been a indie masterpiece in 1989, but in 2001 it seems horribly trite, standard and dated.

Christmas in the Clouds - The film is sweet, well-made and romantic as hell.

The Medicine Show - I had testicular cancer a few years ago (yep - lost a nut) and I can tell you that the ordeal that Silverman's Taylor goes through here is pretty well played out.

A Passage to Ottawa - Subtle, smart, funny and poignant, the film is really well written and well crafted.

Lodger looks in AFF's Shorts 2001 - The Cutting Room, Frank's Book, Dents Are Us, Golden Gate, Shower, and many other AFF shorts are reviewed.
