Austin
Film Festival 2001 Day 6 - October 16, 2001!
| Web stayed over
and got up at 8am. I didn't get up til noon. I don't know
what he did for 4 hours. After I got up, he put my new
CD burner in for me. We had lunch at Baby A's and then
drove up to Fry's to get some computer stuff. I also bought
some CD's, Laurie Anderson's new one, "Life on a String"
and King Crimson's "Sleepless," sort of their Greatest
Hits.
On the way home, we stopped by the park and took some
pictures at the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue.
When we got back, I burned some music CD's for him:
Iggy's new one, "Beat 'em Up," and Gang of 4's "Entertainment."
By now it was after 6pm and time to head for the Paramount.
We saw "Century
Hotel," which was fair and hung out for the Q&A
with the director, David Weaver. He was a really nice
guy from Canada. The whole time he talked, if you closed
your eyes, you'd think you were listening to Scott Thompson
of "Kids in the Hall." Speaking of Scott Thompson, he
came up in conversation the other day when I saw my
pal Ravkill and some of his friends at the "Donnie
Darko" screening. Some guy was talking about how
he and John Christensen had met and partied with Thompson
a few years ago at AFF. John used to kid about how he
knew he wasn't gay because he could have slept with
Scott Thompson and didn't. This guy, whoever he was,
said pretty much the same thing. It was a nice flashback.

Q&A
for "Century Hotel"
|
Between the screenings of
"Century Hotel" and "Gypsy
'83," we went to the lobby and I got a drink. After
I had had one sip, a lady from the Paramount staff asked
Web and I to step outside. I told her I had just bought
a cocktail and she said I could leave it at the bar and
get it when I came back in. I was in my usual catty mood
and rambled off something about the screening being run
by the Richard Linklater AFS Nazi's, which, by the way,
it wasn't, but I was being a bitch. And was about to put
my drink on the bar and continue to bitch when some muscle-bound,
poorly dressed guy came up behind me and started to gruffly
tell me to, in not so many words, get the fuck out. I
was shocked. I have never been treated so rudely by the
Paramount staff before. It shocked me. I understand why
they made us go out, they have to get a head count for
the second show and make sure everything is ready to go
for AFF. I was going, perhaps at my own speed, when this
jerk starts accosting me. I was livid. |
|
We went outside and when we returned, I found the guy
and asked him who was in charge. He told me his name
was Michael something, told me he was in charge and
asked if he could help me. I told him that I was pretty
upset that he had gotten irate with me. He said he didn't
get irate and he felt like I was "Blowing off" his staff
when they asked me to step outside. I told him that
he was wrong and that I was complying and he apologized.
I let it drop there. He was just a guy trying to do
his job. No big deal. He made a judgment call. He made
the wrong judgment but there was no real harm done.
I've had to be "that guy" before in my day job too.
"Gypsy '83" was an interesting film, 2/3rds of a good
film. I wish the director had been there because I had
some questions about the film, but, alas, he was not.
Web and I went back to Lodgeyland Ranch and Web decided
he would head back home to Houston because he had a
lot to do the next day. Almost directly after he left
the phone rang and it was Kelly. He wanted to know if
I wanted to go have dinner at Wan Fu. This was strange
because I was just about to put my leftover Wan Fu from
Day Five in the nuke. I said sure. We met at the restaurant
and talked really intensely for over an hour. We talked
about the film we are making together, what we both
are trying to achieve with it. It was a great talk.
I am more focused on making my own film now than I have
ever been before.
