Austin
Film Festival 2001 Day 5 - October 15, 2001!
Monday, Monday...
Had to work, so that was the majority of my day. By now,
we're into the film only part of the festival anyway, and
these are only at night.
|
Web called and said he would meet me at 6 on Monday
so we could go to the Paramount. The only film I really
wanted to see was "Big Bad Love" that night. Sunday
night, at the "Waking
Life" screening, they had said that Debra Winger
would be there for the "BBL" screening, so I thought
I'd go and see if she showed.
Met Web and we went to the Paramount. When we were
walking to the theater, someone yelled "Hey Lodger"
from a passing car. It was Ryan Williams of the AFF.
He's such a sweetie. I saw him inside a bit later and
we had a only a minute to chat before he was called
away. I'm so glad I screen films for AFF so I can just
relax and enjoy the festival.

My job is done well before the Fest starts. I kinda wish
they had asked me to introduce a couple of screenings but...
oh well.

| Also while we were walking into the Paramount, I made
grape soda come through Web's nose. Well, I didn't do
this intentionally. I was talking about my hair, which
I recently dyed a sort of purple/black and Web asked me
what it looked like before or something. I had been letting
it grow out to gray because Mike Flatter (of Hobble fame)
had asked me to appear in a short film he is doing and
he wanted me to play a fatherly type. But Mike hasn't
been able to get started as soon as he wished and I decided
to dye my hair back to black. When I was telling Web that,
when it was gray, my hair looked like, "What's that guy's
name - the one married to Barbara Striesand?" |

Husband
and wife team Arliss Howard and Debra Winger bring "Big
Bad Love" to Austin
|
He spewed grape soda everywhere. Simultaneously, I said,
"James Brolin." When I asked him what was so funny, he said,
"Damn Lodgey, I haven't been here five minutes and you're
already bringing up Barbara Striesand." Hehe.
Inside, before the screening, we saw my friend Jan, who goes
to a lot of sneak previews and is always at the local festivals.
She sees a lot of movies. We talked about Guillermo del Toro
and how cool he is and a few of the festival films. She had
already seen "Waking Life" at SXSW
but loved it too. We talked about something specific in John
Christensen's scene, but I don't want to ruin that part of
the film for those who have not seen it. We also saw Kelly
and Kevin Smith. no, not THAT Kevin Smith, but the local filmmaker
and actor who is also a screener at AFF. He's also in Courtney
Davis' hilarious short, "The Interview." Web and I watched
the episode of "Lube TV," my cable access show, that features
Courtney and her film (which aired in August or September
or both) later that night. And when Smith comes into the scene
for the first time, he screams. It's a hilarious moment in
the film. We laughed our asses off.

James
Howard, Arliss Howard, Debra Winger and Jeff of AFF
on stage at the Paramount Q&A
|
Someone
from AFF, a lot of times these folks forget to introduce
themselves, introduced Debra Winger and her husband, the
director of "Big Bad Love," Arliss Howard. The two came
out. We were sitting in the third or forth row and could
see them clearly. They both seemed a bit tipsy and Winger
seemed scared shitless. After the film during the Q&A,
though, she and Howard, and James Howard, the co-writer
of the film, seemed quite sober and relaxed. It was lengthy,
but one of the most interesting Q&A's I've ever attended.
Winger was really relaxed and spoke her mind. Howard is
much quieter and speaks very slowly. I think he's one
of those guys who have so much going on in his head, he
has a hard time choosing what to say. Unlike me, I never
censor myself. |
After the screening, Web and I went to Wan Fu on Oltorf and
had some Chinese (food, that is) and then we went to the 503
Coffee House (which is featured in "Waking Life," by the way)
because I was hoping to hook up with my friend Melissa and
see if she could shoot some on my film on Saturday. That's
when Kelly wants to shoot.
Melissa wasn't there, nor was Dusty. Austin, the bartender
type person (the coffee tender?), was there though. He's a
real cutie and very nice to me. The East Side Kings were playing
as they do every Monday night at 503 and the minute we got
there they played "Hoochie Mama." Web was loving it as much
as I was! We stayed til they finished playing at midnight.
Some weird guy with a weird hat was talking and acting like
he was somebody the whole time. I thought maybe he owned the
place or something because he was telling someone on the outside
patio that he had built the deck but when he tried to hit
up Austin for free drinks, I realized he was a nobody. He
sure thought he was somebody though. I hate people like that.
