Austin Film Festival 2000

Day 7 (10/18/2000 )

Well, I goofed around all day and for some reason lost track of time. I thought the screening of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," the new Ang Lee film was at 7:20. I don't know why I thought this because I knew it was 2 hours and that it would be a tight squeeze to get back to the Paramount by 9:30 for "Skipped Parts."

I arrive at the Arbor at 7 and there is a long line. I head inside to see what's up and meet up with Barbara Morgan. AFF Co-Founder and Executive Director. She tells me that they are all ready seating and I, still thinking the film starts at 7:20, think this is odd but head inside. Once in, the place is already pretty full and I eventually realize the show is supposed to start at 7 because it is supposed to get over at 9 or else I can't get downtown for the next screening. By now it is 7:10.

I see my friend John - this is John #4 now, John Cubbison, come in with his brother Tim and a friend. I haven't seen Cubby in several months as he has been living abroad. It was about this time last year that I saw his brother perform "Dracula" at Concordia University as he is an actor. Anyway, Cubby tells me that he did much of the film build-up for the festival as he has some experience in this area.

It takes them another 30 minutes to get everyone in. Then Barbara gets up and introduces Harry Knowles. I realize I will not make the 9:30 showing of "Skipped Parts." I wonder what is showing at 9:30 at the Arbor.

Although I have lived in Austin over a year now and seen Harry at at least 20 or 30 events, I've never seen him speak live before. He does a remarkably clever and amusing introduction to the film. Now it is 7:50 and the film begins.

After the film, I ask the manager of the Arbor what is on the schedule for the rest of the night. He tells me one house will show "the Poor and the Hungry" and the other will show a repeat of "Crouching Tiger..." I confirm with him that they didn't get a print of "Sunset Strip" and then head on my way. I go to Cheapos, but some used CD's, get some dinner and head to the crib. Tomorrow is the last night of AFF.
